Yup, it's still a thing around here, and this very town used to up until recently (since Sweden is considering to reintrocucing mandatory conscription) be the only place in the world that trained conscripts in Swedish (even tho the command language is Finnish, which makes sense.)
This is a very weird strange town indeed!

It's only unfortunate that the weird in my town is dieing out a little...

It's not a weird town, it's just strange.


Like, the place where they now train conscripts used to be a prison camp during/after the civil war, and it was the deadliest camp in the country.
Which also means this town has (iirc) the biggest mass grave in the country.


And the place where I go to school has been, among other things, a German prison camp.


You come here expecting nothing too out of the ordinary, but then when you scratch the surface you find all kinds of things people (understandably) never talk about.
I have no memories of getting taught about how -all- Germans were rounded up during/after the war rather than just soldiers.

Supposedly the place where conscripts are trained is haunted as heck too. Which doesn't sound surprising at all.
I should try asking my brother about it to see if he's got anything interesting to tell about that.

I do see the point, though...

War-torn (and possibly war-crime-y) weird is understandably less fun than weird-weird...

Weird-weird like having a town that is so dependant on it's fishing economy, that it needed an "emergency fishhall" after the original one was bombed by the americans and their silly "precision bombing" in WW2... (There happened to be a U-boat bunker in IJmuiden, you see...)

Also, weird-weird like a town that's so lazy that they ended up using said "emergency fishhall" for over 9 years before building a new one...

Oh, and guess who found a use for said U-boat bunker, wich didn't really took too much damage from the bombs? Some cement products producing company happily settled in it, and is still operational in it today.

Actually, pretty much every german built bunkers within the city limits has just been turned into something usefull straight away. A smaller one near the harbour had been happily turned into a area voltage transformer building, and a many residence bunkers from the atlantikwall were turned into elderly homes, because they were in such a lovely area right at the beach, you know?

You hear the jokes about Dutchies crawling trough the supermarket, because they are looking for low prices, but in reality, they take things to a whole other level...

I tried my best, but no adult stuff other than doing dishes for me... :c

Unless practicing with rifle slings, fixing plate-carriers, cycling new li-po batteries and studying for exams counts as adult stuff. In that case, I have adulted today...
