Do long distance relationships work?

With the right people, under the right circumstances, yes. People are absolute jerks and cheat, or they have to break it off because it's hard to keep a relationship alive when you haven't seen your significant other in ten years. But if both are committed, and they are only apart for 1-2 years, I think it can work.
