Dude, I can tell you: I've been mistaken for a mod on this forum for years. (Got PM's to prive it xD)
And at cons and otehr real-life events this has also happened.

Oh, when I was a volunteer at this con, people kept asking if I was staff, or a volunteer-leader (so to speak), I was not. There were a few who said I should be. So then the year or two after that I applied
