I constantly feel thirsty.
« on: April 26, 2017, 07:42:51 AM »
Yeah, every minute of every hour, I feel like I just need to drink something. And when I do drink something (normally water), I just feel thirsty again immediately. Does anyone have any advice on how to not feel thirsty?

Have you paid attention how much you've been drinking throughout the day?
And do you sweat a lot or need to go to the toilet often?
Do you do a lot of physical actvity?

Yeah, I drink quite a bit. Not sure exactly how much, but a generally healthy amount. I should have a rough amount of how many drink I've had by the end of school in 6-7 hours.

And do you sweat a lot or need to go to the toilet often?

Nope and nope.

Do you do a lot of physical actvity?
The only physical activities that I do are Judo (1-2 hours on Wednesday afternoons) and Tennis (2 hours on Saturday mid-day, 1 hour Thursday morning)

Ask a doctor, or if you're not worried, maybe post about it on a medical community, such as AskDocs.

What type of water do you drink?  Tap water?  Bottled water?  I've seen some of the cheap bottled water have salt in their ingredients to design you to still be thirsty and drink more of their water.

Tap water. Anyways, I'm just going to keep track of when I'm thirsty, where I am, if I am eating something, and how much water I need to drink. I'll have finished the data collection in around 1 week, starting tomorrow.

Odd question, but humour me: Are you having cramps?

Also are you eating anything while you're drinking water?
I noticed I get extra thirsty (especially for water) when I not only have salty snacks/food but also sweet stuff like chocolate.

Hmm. Maybe you have an electrolyte or other kind of nutrient imbalance in your system.

Try not drinking just water--try sipping Gatorade when you're active and exercising and other salubrious liquids. Milk, juice--the less additives, the better.

This is a personal question, but what color does your urine tend to be? It tends to darken if you're actually dehydrated.

I agree with Firox. I want to say they sell a kit at pharmacies now that can detect if you're diabetic, might be worth looking into

I've had a urine test recently, and (apparently) nothing's wrong.

I wouldn't think something is necessarily inherently wrong. There are a few thoughts I have.

1) Some things are not detected with a (standard) urine test or any test. I'm tired all the time and have other issues too. At one point I thought I had Pfeiffers or something else, but nothing came out of several tests. Then rather 'recent' I found out I have chronic exhaustion and chronic pain. Something that's undetectable with tests, something that has to do with the nerves which cannot be detected with scans, blood/urine tests, etc.

2) It could be you just need to drink more than 'normal people'. Everyone is different, everyone needs to drink, eat, exercise, etc. more or less than another person.
As of which what you might consider 'drinking a lot' someone else might think is 'not enough' and the other way around.

3) Do you take salt regularly? It could be your body doesn't retain the water or hydration for a longer period of time. Salt fulfills this function and many other functions. It was also one of the reasons why I asked if you had cramps. I tend to get muscle cramps if my salt levels are low. A few other problems/issues occur as well. I actually live in a coutnry where they lower the salt more and more in foods, giving me more health problems. They sell salt tablets which you can just swallow one and in a day or two my problems such as the cramps are solved ^^ And that stays that way sometimes for months or even a year (or more).
When I stay and eat in a country where the salt on food is somewhat higher, I notice I am much healthier and 'energetic'.
So to me everyone needs to find a balance between salt, sugar, etc. Not to much, but also not too little. What's enough for one person, may not be enough for someone else.

4) I don't think electrolytes is the problem. Gatorade is extremely high in additives so this would be rather unhealthy in comparison to 'plain water'. Also, water contains a lot of electrolytes, as well as plants (think of vegetables and fruit). Considering you exercise/sport a lot, this will also be good for you considering you need more protein. Carbihydrates get burnt and used up as well when you do physical activities, but I'd suggest more protein-based food.
Vegetables, fish, white mea. Avoid red meat, fried stuff, sweets/candies/etc.

That's all I can think of for now.

Where do you live? What's the weather like? what altitude do you live at? how much physical activity do you do? how much coffee/tea/soda do you drink?

There are lots of things that can effect this :P
I think puberty could also have a lot to do with it

Ok, I think I've found the problem.

Back home in Orkney, temperature was averaging at around 6 degrees Celsius, and now that I'm back to boarding at school in Somerset, it started averaging at 10 degrees. I think that my body hasn't adjusted to the temperature changes well. I hope that that was just the problem. If it persists when I get back home in July, I'll look into it further. Thanks for all the help, everyone.
