Does Anybody Else Here Experience Chills from Music?
« on: October 01, 2015, 02:42:54 PM »
I am sure that at least a few of you here experience chills from music. The proper name is musically-induced frisson, and it is a wild ride! I get it pretty intensely from music, and I have been able to figure out exactly what kinds of musical phrasing and characteristics brings this about. Pantera's Cemetery Gates does it to me almost every time, as does Velvet Revolver's Slither, King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King, and a ton of other songs. Sometimes it is almost like being struck by lightning, and depending on the song I have to take a break afterwards since it can be so intense.

Sometimes I find that one song that does this, but it's not often.
When it does happen though, it usually is closely followed by tears of joy.

Been a while since I've found a song like that though :P

I have probably spent too much time analyzing what gives me frisson and what doesn't. I have it down to a science, so much so that if there is a song that I haven't heard in a while, as long as I can remember what the song is like I can accurately predict what elements give me frisson.

What songs do this for you? There may be something in common between each of them.

PANTERA!!!

I get it a lot, most strongly in music. Depending on my mood, the songs that I get it from are typically,

The God That Failed, Fade To Black, Until It Sleeps, Hero Of The Day, Eye Of The Beholder (Metallica)

Expendable Youth (Slayer)

(sic), Tattered And Torn, AOV, Gehenna (Slipknot)

Let's Get This Party Started, Somebody Someone, No Way, Daddy [warning! That's some heavy emotional stuff!!!], Falling Away From Me, No One's There (KoRn) <= There's infinitely more from KoRn, It would take a while!

Your Soul Is Mine, One More Day, Sun Doesn't Rise (Mushroomhead)

How Will I Laugh Tomorrow, Nobody Hears (Suicidal Tendencies)

Darkness, Inside The Fire, Asylum (Disturbed)

Nice! Is there any particular aspect of the songs that you think give you the chills, like a certain instrument playing a passage or the emotional content of the lyrics?  I am always curious what other peoples' triggers are. Two of mine are rapid arpeggiation and suspended chords. I know somebody else who gets frisson from perfectly matched vocal harmony.

It's just the emotion it drives. Not a set instrument, lyric, or anything. Just therapy emotion. It's when you make a connection to the emotion of the song. It's that, "this song gets me" feeling.

This happens to me usually with songs that start out very slow and calm and then build up to an epic climax.

Like this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VokdpAJm9vs (Stacked Crooked - The New Pornographers)

The ending always gets me. I love it.  ^_^

The emotions can sometimes be overwhelming though and I start feeling a bit depressed after the moment ends. Though if I listen to the same song too often I start to get desensitized.

I get this a lot, usually when I'm just sitting on the bus listening to music! Eminem and good bass drops send chills down my spine, along with sadder or more depressing songs

Every once in a while listening to a choral piece or a concert arrangement for a band or orchestra. It's rare but it happens. Or if occurs if it's a song that has memory to me.

Hm, I don't know about chills, but I do sometimes experience little tingles in my brain with certain music. It makes me kinda sleepy  X3 I'm not sure exactly what will cause it, but I've had it from really beautiful singing voices, especially when sung acapella(just the voice, NO 'background music'. Preferably with a little echo). Also from electronic music or edited/autotuned singing on occasion.

And of course, there's just music that makes me feel more positive or energetic, like power metal or triumphant musical theatre songs(like Les Mis  XP )

Amethyst, I tried to quote you but the quoting is busted somehow...

This is something a bit different I think, possibly ASMR. ASMR is a calming, soothing tingly feeling that is caused by a serotonin, whereas frisson is pure dopamine. The two feel extremely different, at least coming from somebody who experiences both of them with great intensity.

I mostly get frisson from music, but there is one song I know of for sure that gives me ASMR, De Luxe by Lush:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCvhc2gRBM4

This makes me feel entirely different than Slither by Velvet Revolver:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKz2U4fvA4U

Both feelings are pretty awesome though.
