My fursona was a wolf a long long time ago when I was young and stupid. Then I grew older and realized how stupid it was and that a wolf just wouldn't fit me as a character if I tried to stick with the traditional wolf traits and/or stereotypes, so I decided to become a woof instead to give myself some more creative freedom with what I "can" or "can't" do. (Using those words pretty loosely since I -could- still be a wolf and do all the things I do now, but I wouldn't be happy with that myself since I'm "not enough wolf" to do a wolf character justice.)
Some people still call me a wolf and I'm fine with that, but personally I'm usually just referring to myself as a woof.
On deviantart, A woof is also a common "species-name" for bad wolf characters (often mary-sues with bad color schemes, cliché backstories, ugly designs and probably 9001 other issues as well) that are ridiculously far removed from reality (they're supposed to be wolves but they don't act like wolves in any way, shape or form. They're basically just wolves by name and body-shape), created by people who quite often seem 100% convinced that wolves are the purest and most perfect achievement of creation.
Sure, I like real-life wolves, but the fanbase they have on the internet is something I'd rather not get too close to, even if it can be entertaining to watch it from a safe distance.
