Just actually thinking about it, it should be possible (with a bit of technical know how) to use VLC to record your desktop...

Livestream is also a really easy to use screen capture software, you can also bring your friends in on the fun for during captures.

It does use quite a bit of computing resource though, so be prepared for lag if your rigs not up for it!

Honestly, I've never tried it. But I suppose it's worth a try.
I think the best way to find the best one for you is to try out as many ones you can until' you find the one that you feel is the best.

All in all, consider buying FRAPS. It's the best of all the one's I've tried and purchased.
The only thing is that it records uncompressed footage and that can require a good SSD. Though in the end, you've got the raw footage and you can compress it to any format you need.

For compression I recommend Handbreak.

I use Bandicam. It's pretty good as far as free recorders go: you can choose to record your whole screen or just a window and you can set the water mark (Which is small and somewhat translucent) so that it's in one of the corners. The only problem I've had with it is that sometimes it will do a strobe effect with the recording where it switching quickly between your desktop and the game, but usually it's fine.

As stated earlier, I'm really not that keen on it. I have 2 SSD's, one 256GB as primary drive and one 128GB for games and other data plus a 1TB hard drive for backups and yet more storage and it still cripples my performance significantly in certain games.

On top of that.. from my experience, rendering it out using just about any video editing software destroys the image quality unless have very low compression levels (which instead yields huge files). It seems like their codec is pretty bad to work with.
