I'm FURIOUS!! With healthcare...
« on: February 14, 2013, 04:39:03 AM »
Furries who don't live in the United States probably won't "get" this. In all Western nations but mine, socialized, universal healthcare is free, and is provided to all with as long as you chip in a tax. I know that is varies and differs between countries, (Canada and Australia have similar programs, but have different results), but it's pretty much the same all around.

For those who live in America like I do, you know where I'm getting at with this.

In 2006, my father almost died from a fall while working on building a house. The scaffolding that he was standing on snapped. I was young at the time, but knew very well about the reality of the situation, and I was very, very afraid. My family has been cursed with sudden, unpredicted deaths. My cousin died in a car accident without warning, and my great uncle was killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. So loosing my father seemed like the pattern was just going to happen again. Thankfully, the pattern broke that day. He was airlifted to a hospital in upstate New York, and despite fracturing his neck, and severing vertebraes, my father lives to this day and made a semi-full recovery.

But it cost us tens of thousands of dollars, and our entire family went bankrupt. We were upper middle-class until the accident. After that, we were forced to sign onto food stamps, sell out house, and in 2010 we could not afford to live in our home in New York and were forced to move to California. In a MOVING TRUCK. Following the accident, my Dad was fired by the construction company, and is suing them not just for wrongful termination, but for failure to maintain safety protocol for the scaffolding.

Non-Americans would be shocked that my Dad's hospital visit would cost us so much, if not cost anything at all. Many believe that it is unimaginable that our government would choose not to cover its citizens for hospital visits, and that we could go bust trying to afford surgeries.

Some Americans who had just suffered an accident would refuse to take a ride in an ambulance to the hospital because they would be burdened with debt should they survive. We are terrified of going to the hospital!!

And yet The United States government pays more money than any nation on earth to prop up our flawed medical plan. Americans are dependent on third-party health insurance plans to cover their costs, and if you lose your job, you could lose your insurance.

I blame politics as part of the problem. For non-Americans furs who don't know how Congress works, I'll just let you know that we only have two political parties that can hold federal offices; The Republican party and the Democratic party. The Democrats (liberal) have been pushing for universal healthcare since Bill Clinton. But the Republicans, who are staunchly conservative and hold a majority and control Congress' House of Representatives (sort of like the American parliament) have repeatedly shot down any attempts to bring up such an issue, fearing that Americans will become dependent on big-government handouts. Give me a break. We are the single most powerful nation on the face of the Earth; a nation that totes and hails our freedom to own a gun and drink until you pass out, yet since the majority of Congress has been opposed to gay and women's rights, the government's inability to compromise on aiding our ill and sick citizens is sadly not surprising.

We have excellent health care, provided by some of the most skilled doctors and professionals in the field. But health COSTS are astronomically high.

So I'll leave you with that, forums. What can America do to solve our medical cost issues? What stories do you have to share? And what do non-American furries think The United States can learn from your elected bodies?

I love my country. God bless this country! But I fear the price and coverage of health care may never change when I come close to death like my other family members have.

Thanks for reading, anyfur.

Must be pretty hard, tax pays for healthcare here in England, we have something called the NHS but I think that such things might be only available in a smaller area if at all.

tax pays for healthcare here in England

Now see, something like that happening in America would be totally unheard of. Some Americans with a large income is perfectly fine with paying for a third-party insurance plan to treat themselves. Yet the idea of using a fraction of your income to provide healthcare for other citizens is pretty foreign and mostly frowned upon. Also, not all of us have a large income to afford a luxury like health insurance, or any income at all. We have more people in poverty in America than England has PEOPLE.

So that's why I'm so mad. Our Democratic party isn't far from your Labor party (is it spelt "Labour"?), and have been pondering on a single-payer healthcare plan for decades. But alas, the government is largely conservative and very opposed to socialism.

Thanks for your input, Kio!

It'd be spelt Labour in the US, and Labour are more like selective liberals than the real pro-work Labour. Even the Conservatives are liberals, really, and the liberals are like the green party, so there's only one main party in this country, really, and that's green liberals, but independence parties like UKIP and Common Sense Party are rising, UKIP are a bit Labour inclined I guess but with the support of independence, those are in high support of improving the NHS. Don't see how US could buy any more independence, though, US is a weird country when it comes to politics, really.

Now that's interesting. I guess Englishmen and women are so supportive of a leftist agenda/society that even the conservatives are going down that path. I never figured your country to be leaning towards a liberal bias... but since marriage equality is now being debated and supported in your country's parliament, then I guess I'm wrong!

It appears as if your conservatives are our version of moderate, and the liberals are very popular and very-leftist. Here, its all just in the opposite direction! Most liberal Democrats are more center-left here, and the conservatives are SUPER CONSERVATIVE.

Now this "Labor Labour" party and the new "Common Sense Party" actually sound pretty awesome. Can't say the same for the UKIP. It looks like a fluffed-up, cuddly version of our Tea Party (don't be mistaken, only Democrats and Republicans are qualified to hold federal office. But Tea Party members are almost entirely extremely devout Christian Republicans).

England really has it down for progressive reform. This includes single payer healthcare, as I was talking about.

And in regards to your last sentence..... NO NATION does politics weirder than America!

Don't see how US could buy any more independence, though.

That's because we already sold it all!!  D:

Thanks Kio!

Don't know much about the tea party but I think UKIP pull mostly on the working class' yay chain for stuff like immigration mostly, that's because a lot of places in the UK have turned into immigration hotspots which sparks rage in a lot of British people (I know this because near everyone seems to share this yet cannot vote change because all the top parties have the same agenda), but common sense party endorses more on fair use of tax using middle ground morale. There always need to opposition, as a balance is what makes a society sustainable, government works by power and too much freedom leads to no law and that'd lead to anarchy. But the idea is the two parties there are more happy to pay to create a more sustainable NHS, with some similar politics in the US, I don't really see how it couldn't work there but then it is a bigger country, which also means more scandals and more coverage expenses. Damn politics, the subject gives me headache, I wish more intelligent people got into power (and don't just mean intellectually intelligent). We all just want to get on with life, don't we? They should be working on the real issues.

the same thing actually happened to my family. In 2010 my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and at first the insurance company denied us coverage for her chemotherapy and radiation treatments, but the first few measures of Obamacare started up and they were forced to cover us. I too understand the plight of us Americans and our failed healthcare system.

My blood got boiling when you said that your insurance company refused to cover your mom's chemo. My mother had breast cancer too. The Affordable Care Act wasn't a momenteous achievement for the medical industry, but... by god... at least it was something. No insurance plan can drop coverage for pre-existing conditions, and thanks to it, I can stay on my Dad's plan until I'm 26. I would have never have been able to receive my critical medication today had the ACA not passed.

Thanks for sharing!

Yeah I agree personally with a lot of the sentiments. The whole point of paying for insurance is so that you have fall back in case things happen. The problem is that a lot of these companies to push their profits actually paid individuals who sole job it was to figure out ways how not to pay for the person's care sorta defeating the point of it to begin with @.@ .  Yeah the banning of denying care for pre-existing conditions was a great step  ^_^ .

Wow, i am actually shocked that they are able to charge you the full hospital cost.
In the Netherlands we have a mandatory health insurance that will pay for any medical costs you may make.

Yeah that's the way it is here in the United States. Universal health care (a.k.a. single-payer insurance) just never happened in America.  If you need to you to the hospital... you need to pay it. And if you're not insured by a third-party corporation, than that money will come from your pocket.
