A fursona is what you make of it. To me it's just an alter ego I use online, to some it's their "other half" that completes their soul. So it can vary greatly.

I've seen furries that have inanimate objects as their fursonas. And myself, my fursona is basically myself as a fox.

Your fursona can be whatever you want it to be.
Most people do just make their fursona how they see themselves if they were an anthromorphic/ferel/mystical character.
-tt-, mine is just how I feel I'd look like if I were a demon, not even based on any particular animal, and it's still acceptable.
Even still, you don't need other people to confirm what's acceptable for you or not, just do what you feel. Whatever makes you happy.
