Soo, does programmer you coincidentally know if the processor MHz has any effect on the clock's accuracy? :s

Because clocks are important, and I wanna know...

I don't think it does.
But I'll double check.
Everyone seems to have it, so here's mine

I'm assuming it does.

The faster a clock ticks (electronical tics count too) the more accurate it is.

But, this is the processor, ofcourse, not the actual quartz crystal... :/

Oh, well...

I don't think there's a relation between the system clock that actually measures time and the processor clock.
The only place I'd say it matters is on a super low level of programming, where you can actually count the instructions and messure time that way. Then of course, more instructions per second means more accurate time.
But it'd mean the code only works for that specific controller and its frequency if you want to measure actual seconds.
And also, no idea how hard it would be to write stuff that does something in assembly.
Everyone seems to have it, so here's mine

Yeah, soo it doesn't really matter, indeed...

I guess the only way the processor speed has effect on the accuracy is maybe the time it takes for the signal from the clock to be recieved and processed?

I'm concerned about it, because if this get's big for me, I'll inevitably fall down the deep-dark world of positioning systems... :P

Easy...

I want to mess around with my own simple little positioning systems that aren't dependant on the GPS network in any way or form, and get those little positioning systems accurate enough to make some autonomously flying drones! :P

Ooh okay. That sounds pretty interesting!
Though I don't think it'd need a super accurate clock. Should be fine with the normal things.
Though I believe making a positioning system would require more than 8kB of flash so better get one of the bigger ones

Well, thanks!

And, I don't neccecarily think so.

GPS needs atom clocks because it's signal travels at the speed of light, making it an almost immeasurably short travel time. But, I think that systems with other waves, like radar for example, are more managable. I've been to maritime college, and I've never heard of navigation radars having atom clocks, even though their range measurments are said to be more accurate than their bearing measurements.

And, yes, the MCU's that I ordered have 16 kb of flash, if I'm not mistaken. But, I still don't expect to get that done with a single 20-DIP microcontroller! :P

The thing with GPS is, it's not just about position.
It's about position, speed and height all from the geostationary orbit.
Radars are a bit closer to us and work in a different fashion too I believe.

Ever heard of the "DECCA" navigation system?

A system similair to that is probably my best bet if I wanna build my own positioning systems.

It's simply three radio transmitters set up on a fixed and known location (The DECCA ones are in Norway, France, and Britain, as they were originally intended for use on the D-day landing) that then use a radio receiver on the vessel to triangulate it's own position, by using the three fixed transmitters.

"DECCA" was supposedly accurate enough for my own darn grandpa to use it for sailling into the IJmuiden harbor, during fog, soo I reccon I'm fine there! :P

Only that you have to remember the closer the transmitters are, the less precise it gets .
Probably nothing to worry about if you have more than a couple of centimetres between the bits though.
