Cute girl in the train seemed surprisingly eager to move her backpack out of the way, to let me sit besides her, but being the somewhat sollitairy me, I just slowly moved on and settled down in that little intermediate are, where people usually only come to embark/disembark.

Sometimes, in cases like that, I wonder if I've just threw away the chance of meeting my significant other...

You're bored, Michen, what do you think about it? :/

People voluntarily sitting next to each other on public transit?
Unheard of.

In the Netherlands, it's quite common...

Although, don't take it from my post that a someone sitting next to you, or letting you sit next to him/her neccecarily means that he/she thinks you're attractive... XP

Sometimes busses/trains are just really crowded, and you kinda have to...

Around here it's assumed only creeps and weirdos will sit next to someone on a bus/train/whatever if there are two free seats next to each other available.
Unless the people are friends or family or something, of course.
Gotta have that personal space and stuff.
It's (barely) tolerated if there really are no other options (based on the usual sighs and/or awkward shuffling if you have to sit next to someone due to no free seats), but even then, the gods of public transit always arrange it so that you get the least convenient seat.
Got tons of bags? You either get the window seat and the person next to you is going to travel further than you, making it really awkward  to try and get out once you've reached the station, or you get the other seat and the other person is supposed to get off before you, also making it awkward to try and let them out when you've dragged half the house with you.

Thankfully I don't have much need for travelling by train or bus anymore.

Well, yes, having the window seat while you have to travel further than the person next to you is an inconveniance, but luckily, in the Netherlands, all you have to do is stand up from your seat, and the person next to you will always get the message and stand up, aswell, to let you leave your seat, without the need for any words to be spoken.

And, then this lady just sits down beside you, and you spend the next 45 chatting with each other. But, such is life in the NL.

Funny, how in contrast with Finland, under the right condition, you can actually make someone feel a little bad if you don't sit next to them!

When there are lots of full seats, and it starts to get acceptable for people to sit next to each other, and someone sees you approaching, and clears their bag off of the seat next to them, but you walk on to a diffirent seat, despite having seen that the seat is clear, you can almost always see just a tiny spark of dissapointment, and inconfidense in the person that you just denied. It's kinda like a miniature version of the harrasment that is ignoring someone, who just offered you a high five... :s

It's funny how much non-verbal communication happends, without half of the people involved even realising it...

Yes, that's pretty much how it works here too. Just start poking at your bags, move around awkwardly, and looking towards an/the exit, and people will take the hint and probably mentally celebrate finally getting a brief moment of two seats all to themselves.
It's beautiful.

It's just that trying to walk past someone and not get stuff stuck somewhere/accidentally hitting someone with something that's awkward.
Trains, and especially not buses, aren't really built for people dragging so much stuff with them.

I've never had that problem here. guess it's that the Netherlands isn't really big enough to merrit for more than one bag on train/bus rides.

Either or Dutch PT vehicles are bigger? :/

The only thing that commonly happends here is people that think standing in the open spaces in a driving bus/train is as easy as just regulairly standing, before ending up being thrown into you, when the bus alters speed or attitude...

Stuff may occaisionally get into awkward positions after collisions of such sorts...

But, it's not exactly like people make a big deal out of that happening, if not even secretly seek it out on purpose, sometimes...

It's probably because I tend to bring stuff with me for extended stays.
I usually only go by bus/train when heading off to visit people, and because of the distances we usually try to time it so that we'll have at least a week or two to hang out and stuff.
Which means plenty of stuff in several bags.
