Hmmm...

It does depend on what you like... I personally believe most sports/hobbies tend to get repetive very quickly, and aren't really usefull outside of it in many ways. I am, however, a firm promoter of martial arts, like Ju-Jitsu!
Spoiler for Hidden:
First of all, we have a lot of places where you can practice them in the netherlands, soo, it's very likely that there's a place not far from your home. It's also suprisingly fun! The people that you're training with (in my experience) are really nice, and fun to hang out with! And, it doesn't get repetetive!

There are SOO MANY ways to get your ass kicked (Disclaimer: People don't actually kick or hurt each other. Some of the positions you're forced in maybe unpleasant, but they're not supposed to hurt, and almost never do) in Ju-Jitsu that you've got quite a few years to go before you've experienced them all.

And, you're also learning stuff, wich is why I personally like it soo much! The sport is defined by growing! Experiencing new ways "to get your ass kicked" learning to see them coming, and effectively stop them, and at some point even succesfully taking down an oponent, and "kicking his ass" instead! I think it's just really satisfying to feel like you've learnt new stuff, and got more proficient every training day.

And, ofcourse, it's actually usefull outside of the sport aswell!

Because, if someone does something to you, for whatever reason, be it pesky narcistic older siblings, trying to steal your lunch, or bigger classmates/strangers just being assholes, or worse, trying to mug/attack you, you simply know how to handle those situations better, because that's what you're training with, every week!

And, most importantly of all, (and also the most overlooked/underrated) it boosts your self-confidence big time!

This is actually something that most people don't believe matters, but I've seen it with my own eyes. The whole way that you are trained also includes your stance, and attitude. They'll also train you to stand more firmly, making you harder to push around, and even scarier to people thinking of doing so. Really... People take that attitude home and into their daily life, and it somehow just makes them a lot more confident in themselves, and that confidence alone seems to be enough for the people I train with to scare off bullies, or assholes!

Yeah... Needless to say, I really think a martial art would be a good idea! Specifically Ju-Jitsu, because it's aimed much more at the pure self-defense purpose, teaching you all the dirty tricks, and skipping the useless stuff, like Karate's "dance moves" that don't really do anything...

Waves around Dutchie flag...

I did two different martial arts, and the last one I did was taught by the sensei who was master in ju-jitsu, aikibudo and judo.
Judo was like wrestling,
Ju-jitsu was like weird breakdancing,
and Aikido was constantly deflecting the enemy.

I used to do Karate for a bit, then I got bored and started Judo.

And just like Ventus said, Judo is basically wrestling.

I'll be sure to try and have fun...

But I'm going to a military base in Dartmoor... and it's going to be very wet according to weather forecasts.

@Vs

Huh... That's weird... :\

To be honest, I've only done Ju-Jitsu, and I personally see it more as taking very specific attack scenario, and repeating them, almost like dance moves, from wich you may learn some helpfull thing. And then having a friendly little fight with each other, starting off with some sparring, followed by grabbing and trying to get each other on the ground, followed by rolling over the floor, and wrestling, all meant to learn how to put your tricks to use in an actual fighting scenario.

At the place I practice at, we also sometimes do this thing, where we put each member in the center, in turns, and have them shield their head, and stuff while two others "beat" him/her up. Not really punching/kicking, but just enough to kinda get some used to the chaos of being in an actual fight. I've heard it's an unconventional thing to do, though...

But, yeah, the weird breakdancing thing does make sense, if you look at it from that perspective... :I

Who will be giving you orders? The army, or just your teachers?

Wel, it's the Brittish army... Soo, it can't be too bad... (Wich may still be bad)

How are you on armies, though? Do you hate it with every breath, or are you secretly kinda consider to try standing out the officers? :P

The army is respectable, in my opinion. They are prepared to die to protect the country, but I would rather not have anything to do with it, to be honest. I joined the RAF section of the school's cadet force partly because I wanted to learn to fly, and partly because I had basically no other choice :/ . But anyway, I'll probably be off to bed soon. Maybe see you tomorrow morning, maybe Monday evening, Tuesday at the latest. Good night!
