If you get coal dust in your eyes, it's going to irritate them because it's dust, not because it's sulfuric acid.

You're likely right here.

I'm in a nautical study, not biology.

But in cargo safety class I've heard that coal as bulk cargo can not only cause fire hazard/suffocation/Serious stability hazard, but, if I remember correctly, when it gets wet the sulphuric acid comic out of it could actually damage the ships stuff.

Reading that out loud now makes it sound a little over-the-top dangerous, Soo, I guess I'll ask...

The percentage of sulphur actually in the coal is quite irrelevent whan you're a post-panamax tanker that has two-hundred-thousand metric tonnes of the stuff on board.

And the swell displaces all the fluid to one corner.

What might be a pretty big deal on why it was included as a hazard is that any liquid entering the ships hold is pumped out trough te bilge pumps to prevent free surface moment.

If the water has sulphuric acid in it, the envirement may not like it that much...
