The barret does it's job, yes, but other weapons do that same job better.
 
And yes, it's the Steyr 15.2. One of the biggest, sexiest rounds on market, used to kill very hard things at extreme range. Again, other things are cheaper and work just as well, but if you're going to make an Anti-Material rifle, why bother with the .50 BMG?

Most affordable round that can reach out to a mile? The classic 7.62x51mm. Of course box ammunition probably wont get you anywhere, so you'll want a match grade handload, but they can make the shot, with skill and patience. Then dedicated ammunitions like the .338 Lapua Magnum, of which I am an eternal fan, are a bit more pricey but make life so much better.

That's all a matter of preference. Most civilian rifles for the .338 are highly modified competition guns, so saying any one is best gets even harder. But again, I want to avoid saying "best", especially because I havent fired them all! But the one I am most familiar with, and a great fan of is the Savage Model 110 BA. I hope to buy one myself some day.
