Either "have a good time" or "have a good day" are acceptable (depending on the formality and language-nazi levels of those around you). Personally, when it's night, I use the "time" variation myself.

Some languages have different modes of saying goodbye that indicate the finality of the statement. For example, in French, the traditonal "aurevoir" (literally translated into "see again") is a more common way to say goodbye as the sentiment is "we are only parted until we see one another again". The more formal "adieu" (literally "to God") is a more final statement meaning that "the next time I forsee us being together is when we both stand before God".

I can see that some words out us language came from France
If we say 'good sailing' in old dutch (vaarwel), we mean until never see.

we have Vaarwell in Afrikaans too... but in 19-something it(afrikaans) was referred to as Kitchen-Dutch, so that might be it.
