Really? I mean... REALLY? surely Valve wouldnt release a new game just because it has new characters, melee weapons and a new enemy. I mean, the average TF2 update could do that!

There has to be more to this than meets the eye. Perhaps it's open world like was originally planned for L4D... Valve only release games when they can match the leap that the previous game made. L4D made a massive jump in online gameplay. L4D2 has to do the same, just like Half Life 2 did with story, and just like Portal 2 is doing with innovation and just like Counterstrike did with online play, all those years ago.
"Parents always think kids are wasting their youth, and always have done [so] down through the millennia," says Tom Forsyth of RAD Game Tools. "'That Ug, always holding things. His front paws will develop in funny ways. Why can't he walk on all fours like normal proto-hominids?' And so, whatever the kids spend the most time doing, that's always what parents think is a waste of time, and what is corrupting their lives. It doesn't matter what that is. If all they did was homework, parents would be worrying that their kids aren't becoming well-rounded people. And, in fact, parents do this - enrolling math nerds in karate classes and the like. There is no way to win - parental paranoia ensures that kids are always doing the wrong thing."

if what you're saying is true, than they could have updated the original half-life to have improved graphics, increased plotline length, and elminate hl2 and the episodes. but instead, they kept the other previous games the same, but updated the engine for them. odds are L4D2 is going to be somewhat different from the original one...

but this is just my opinion, I really don't want to get in a page-long arguement...

it feels like an expansion, cause sequels totally redo everything (usually) awesomely

but they stopped making expansions after Half Life. The whole reason Steam was made was so that the users on CS: Source didnt completely disappear every time they released a patch, and would only build up again once that patch was downloaded. An expansion would just do that except even worse because a patch is free. An expansion is not and not everyone would buy it.

Apparently it has 25 new missions, so that's like 5 new campaigns. 4 new characters, new weapons, new enemy, and significant AI director upgrades.

So the only thing truly different is the AI director. There has to be a massive difference in the director if that's all they have. But with only one year of work before it's apparently released in November, i wouldnt think they could have done enough. But then this was just a teaser.

Left 2 Die wouldnt work so well, and Right 2 Live just sounds like an anti-abortion slogan.

The mummies
so the logical next step would be vampires, and then ghosts?

CYBORG NINJA PIRATE JESUS
They could be the new 4 characters.

Where a group of zombies, vampires, mummies and Nazi ghosts attempt to escape from the Empire... I tell you what, that could be made into a good game.

update: All you could ever want to know about L4D2

Ok, so i can see why they made a new standalone game, since there's quite a difference between the two, but I do think that it could have been a lot of updates in one box. I would give them another year or two because I would expect this level of advancement from somebody like Infinity Ward, but not from Valve.
When I saw L4D for the first time, i thought it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen in a long time. I dont feel that with L4D2 and I hate the fact that they keep going on about it being "bigger and better".
Leave that kind of language at the door with Halo and COD.

There's a reason Valve is so special and it's because they can take the time and the risks that other companies cant. I have a feeling that this is going to be another HL2 Ep1.

it's a sequel, don't expect it to change too much to the original formula.. it's not like Halo 2 completely changed halo 1.. I'm personally guessing more weapons, more maps and maybe some more modes too... though ofcourse i'm completely open to the idea of the game having a whole bunch of unshowcased innovations and i do think it has at least a few things we haven't been showed yet.

though yes, i agree that they could've waited a bit longer with the creation of a entirely new left 4 dead game and maybe release some expansions for the first one first.
