Need some advice.
« on: January 27, 2009, 05:07:03 PM »
So a couple nights ago I forgot to clear my browser history and my roommate found this site. (We are poor and so we share the same computer.) He asked me about it this morning and I had to basically explain what a furry is and what the whole thing is about. Well it turns out he's a hardcore Trekkie so he pretty much understood right away, told me I've always been a normal, stable guy and it was all cool. So that part is pretty awesome.

The problem is he knows all my other close friends, and a few of those friends happen to be channers. I also know they happen to be the kind of people who absolutely hate everything furry and believe all the negative stereotypes. Because of this, I have always kept a low profile in the past. Well, the past few weeks I've been slowly working on introducing myself to the furry community, so my info is pretty much out there now. So here's the real problem. My roommate can't keep a secret to save his life.

So here I am, trying to figure out what to do about all of this. Do I just keep quiet and risk him slipping up? or do I just spill the beans myself and just take the consequences? See, my other friends have been friends of mine for years now. I pretty much consider them family, but if this gets out, I don't really know what to expect.

This all seems so pathetic coming from a 26 year old man, but I never have made friends easily, and I'm a VERY social person. This could actually affect my life in a very big way. I'm just really at a loss at what I should do? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If they are your friends they wont stop being so because your a furry.  If anything they should look at it and say 'Oh I guess I was wrong and the bad stereotypes only apply to some furries.'  What I'm saying is, just tell your friends and if they say something like 'Go away fur' then you know they weren't really your friends and you can move on.

It would be much better for your friends to hear about your furriness from you rather than someone else. At least you'd be sure you could defend yourself then and control how the topic is introduced.

I agree with Llyr, you should tell them yourself, and if they are really your friends they shouldn't be bothered by it.

I agree...if they think nothing of it and accept for who you are..you have nothing to worry about and that means they're true friends.. if not...don't bother with them..not worth the time or effort...

I agree with WZ, cuz if you let your roommate tell em, then it seems like your trying to hide it from them because its bad, proving their sterotypes true. But if you tell them, you can break it to them lightly, and explain that all furs don't do that kind of stuff. If they say don't wanna be with you, then forget them. It may be hard to think about right now, but you'll be happier in the long run because you'll know all your friends will accept you no matter what. :)

Yeah, all of you are right. There's nothing wrong with being who I am, so why should I try to hide it? It's been a stressful time for me lately and I don't really think all too clearly when I'm under stress. I'll talk with them tomorrow and see where it goes. Best case scenario, they're cool with it and everything is fine. Worst case scenario, I lose a bunch of friends and they defile my identity on the net. Eh, I've lived through much worse.

So I went out with a group of friends tonight and explained my situations to them. Most of them took it well/were indifferent about it, but a couple of them chastised me for it. They all poked fun at me for it, but I hang with a crowd of jokers anyway, so I just exchanged blows with them and took it with a sense of humor. We'll see where it goes from here, but overall I was making a big deal out of nothing. [/dramatic panic attack]

Good to hear.
The bad thing about this is that possibly they will start making furry jokes more often, but if you can handle it ,it can be even funier, isn't it?

Yeah I hung out with them last night and they made a ton of furry jokes, it's just something else for me to exchange blows with. I love joking around, so they'll just provide me with more ammo for my own enjoyment. I've never been a LIFE IS SO SUPER SERIOUS kind of person, so I'm just glad I got it off my chest. I hate hiding things from people.

I'm glad you got off without a hitch, Wolf. Things got overly dramatic. You can read about it on my rant if you care.
