Seven Levels (Working Title)

Yes I'm making another game, game dev is a fickle thing and you'll probably make a 100 games before you finish one, but this one is coming further than most of the others and I'm using a lot of the old code from previous games (highlighting the importance of making adaptable code!)

This game is a 2D rougelike akin to Binding of Issac or Nuclear throne, sort of a mix between the two as far as gameplay is concerned. The game has you, the player, going through various rooms defeating enemies, picking up items and just trying to survive. The story is that humans discover a way to tap into gods power, resulting in basically magic. This magic first acts as a technological revolution, everyone has magical based technology or artifacts in their home and uses magic on their day to day life. The one thing they didn't know is that magic slowly corrupts the minds of mortals, and eventually everyone begins going insane causing all of society to collapse into rioters, anarchists and crazed lunatics. God notices how humans have abused their power and decides to wipe the slate clean, bringing down angels from heaven to restart humanity. The devil, noticing that humans have basically succumbed to sin, raises his army of the damned to reclaim the earth from god and act as humanity's new ruler. Finally, a different sect of humanity, who rejected magic altogether, begins still investing their energy on technology. Realizing the only way to separate themselves from the crazed humans is to become one with technology, becoming tech priests and cyborgs.

A blurb of the game could be "Fight crazed magical humans, robots, angels and demons in a quest to defeat the mysterious and evil Boss Dom, who unlocked the secrets of Gods power!". This blurb highlights the games primary differentiating mechanic, the idea of factions. There are seven levels of the game, the first six levels can either be a Corruption (Human) level, a Salvation (angel) level, a Damnation (Demon) level or an Alteration (Cyborgs) level. The levels will be picked randomly though certain items will skew the probabilities. Each level will spawn different enemies, have different environments and will have probability of spawning different items.

Importantly each level has different gameplay mechanics, some items may be very good at versing one race, but very poor at versing another, so acquiring it and pimping your character up for a specific gameplay style is a gamble! The races are as follows:

Corruption: Corruption are the crazed humans drunk on gods power. Their whole concept is to get into the player close and attack wildly, they are close combat oriented and usually head directly to the player with not much tactical prowess. They are insane, one trademark ability of the corruption is some characters throw damaging hallucinating bombs, which not only damage you but make mirages appear, these mirages seem like normal enemies to the player but do no damage and die instantly when attacked, they act to distract the player from the real threats. So corruptions general strategy is to rush the player and try to kill him as quickly as possible.

Salvation: Salvation are the angels, their more long-term and passive creatures. Their strategy is to keep far away from the player and slowly chip at the players health and stats, acting mostly defensively trying to dodge or block the players attack. A trademark characteristic of salvation is their use of support units that attempt to beef up offensive units, there may be angels that fly around a powerful salvation enemy healing it, or angels that give enemies extra speed or strength, or even spawn enemies. Angels themselves won't do much damage but can survive a lot and the longer they survive the tougher they get, so as a contrast to corruption, the player must remain on the offensive rather than the defensive.

The other two races aren't as fleshed out

Damnation: Damnation act as demons, they are more like tanks, close combat offensive attackers that can deal a lot of damage and take a lot of damage. They however will lack for speed, making up for it using various teleportation techniques, as well as their trademark ability of control. In which some enemies can control the player and fiddle around with the players controls, for example freezing the player (which the player can break out of by pressing the mouse button a lot) or inverting the players controls for a brief time. Damnation's whole shtick will be to do slow high impact damage, so the players main goal is to be defensive, but instead of killing everyone as fast as possible, the player needs to be more careful and patient.

Alteration: Alteration are robots and cyborgs, thus they mainly are projectile base and have a lot of static enemies that don't move but shoot. I haven't figured out a trademark ability for them yet. Their main goal will be to kill the player from a distance, but at the same time taking a much more aggressive and offensive role than Salvation, they will also work a lot with lasers, so less projectiles and more timed laser beams that will damage the player.

I'll upload a video of the game when I feel like and the game is in slightly more developed state, currently developing enemies. The features I have are

  - Character animations
  - Randomly generate dungeon using my own custom algorithm
  - Health
  - Spells! (Main form of attack)
  - Death
  - Stats

And that's about it so far.
