If absolutely needed, Someone else can play them.
Equally, talk to the GM, and see if there is any way to get him "offscreen" without killing him outright. Dropping him down a giant pit, or having him fall into the ocean, are easy ways to drive him away from the main party for a short period of time so you can play without him.
Worst case senario, if he paused in or before a big battle, make the villains first spell be a hold person or equivalent, and just say "Well, he is still there, but he can't act so we move on without him
