Wandering the Wastes - Two Private Games Open
« on: February 11, 2016, 12:47:20 AM »
Now accepting applications for two solo games! Game information and character sheet stuff spoilered below:
Spoiler for The world you are in:

“You know no other home than the village of Arghein. Your daily existence is spent eking out a living in a small village surrounded on all sides by black obsidian crags, all of which are riddled in chaotic fashion amongst a black sand desert which is prone to scouring sandstorms. The land is unforgiving, and any food coaxed from tending to this wretched place is hard won. Times of plenty are few and far between, and hunger is something which looms over all who live here.”

“There is little promise outside of Arghein. The dunes of black are inhabited sparsely, but there is always the chance of running into a group of bandits at best and marauding creatures of the wastes at worst. From what you and the others in your village know, these wastes stretch for miles upon miles, and for all intents and purposes Arghein may as well be the sole bastion of civilization for as far as the eye can see.”

“While wiling away the weary hours of their lives, villagers speak about things rumored to be beyond the wastes, assuming that they aren’t infinite in size. Of all things that the villagers speculate about, there are but few things with any consistency. In hushed tones, the villagers speak of those who have traveled in years past far into the wastes, only to spy floating cities in the sky. By night they are nearly invisible against the starless sky of black in the summer or the writhing green skies of winter, but by the day they are brilliant beacons of ivory white where it is said that all who dwell within want for nothing at all. Whether or not there is any veracity to these stories is anybody’s guess, but there is not a soul here that doesn’t wish deep in their hearts for such a thing to be true.”

“In any case, there are more pressing concerns in the dreary and mundane days of village life. There are tools to be repaired, garments to be mended, crops to harvest, and bandits to watch for. Few people here care much about what lies off in the wastes and believe them to be nothing more than stories people tell each other to pass the time, but what if there is more to these tales than that?”

“Could a better life really lie somewhere out there, far beyond the horizon?”
Spoiler for Character creation guidelines:

Application criteria

Name - Fantasy appropriate names please
Species - If you are a hybrid or a nonstandard species, please just give a little bit of a description. Anthropomorphic only for this game please.
Gender - Whatever that may be

Skills - You get a total of 60 skill points at the start of the game. You may take a maximum of five ranks in each skill, with each rank having a different cost. Major skills cost more than minor skills, but being able to cook or gather food in the wilds is not liable to help you win a fight. Of course, if you have no plans to cause or get into trouble, maybe minor skills will be all you need.

Not all skills that are possible are in the list below. Depending on where you go and what you do, you might add a few other skills to your possibilities (including magic!).

Major skills - All combat skills fall here plus Leadership. Rank costs: rank 1 for 2 points, rank 2 for 4 points, rank 3 for 6 points, rank 4 for 10 points, rank 5 for 15 points
  • Armor Proficiency
  • Leadership
  • Shield Proficiency
  • Weapon Proficiency (this is a category, please put ranks in the individual skills below):
  • Axes (one-handed)
  • Axes (two-handed)
  • Blades (one-handed)
  • Blades (two-handed)
  • Blunt Weaponry (one-handed)
  • Blunt Weaponry (two-handed)
  • Bow and Arrow
  • Polearms
  • Staves
  • Thrown Weaponry

Minor skills - All noncombat skills fall here. Rank costs: rank 1 for 2 points, rank 2 for 4 points, rank 3 for 6 points, rank 4 for 8 points, rank 5 for 10 points:
  • Cooking
  • Crafting (choose each crafting skill separately)
  • Disguise
  • Foraging
  • First Aid
  • Ride Animal
  • Navigation
  • Speechcraft
  • Stealth

Appearance - Build, hair, clothes, coloration, and other distinguishing features

Attributes and Personality - Write a small paragraph about what makes your character tick. Try to write a small paragraph or so to paint a decent picture for me. Are you a hulking brute who can perform hard labor all day without breaking a sweat? Are you book-smart and always caught reading or writing? Are you the life of the party? Do you absolutely hate cats? Think along those lines. No Mary Sue stuff please: you can’t be good at everything. I will keep this one informal, so that way you aren’t too constrained.

Background - Try to write a blurb of some kind about your character’s history. The whole cosmology you will be venturing in is a custom one in every way it could be, so this might be a challenge. If you want to talk in general terms here, that is fine. If you want to get more specific, feel free to ask some questions in this thread or via PM and I will be happy to help.

Inventory - You may have up to one each of the following
  • A melee weapon (all metal weapons are made from bronze)
  • A ranged weapon with a quiver and some ammo, OR a few units of some throwing weapon (all metal weapons are made from bronze)
  • Fancy clothes, a full suit of leather armor OR a bronze breastplate (the breastplate will protect your torso better than the leather armor will, but the leather armor covers more of your body; fancy clothes have no combat function but they sure look nice!)
  • A mule OR a horse (the mule is slower than the horse but it can carry more)
  • Backpack, rope, and a bedroll to sleep in
  • A compass or a spyglass

At this point the only thing I am asking is for good grammar, and that you adhere to the stuff in the character guidelines. I am absolutely happy to answer any questions, of course! Feel free to either post them in this thread or send them via PM. They can be about making a character, about the world, about how the game will be run, or whatever you please! If you have a character concept you would like to play but you are not sure if it fits with the guidelines, please ask about it and I will see if I can permit it.

One thing I must ask: if you can only post once in a blue moon, please leave room for others. I reserve the right to terminate games that go too long without player activity, in which case I will look for another player.

The first two character sheets that I deem sufficiently done will be the characters I will take. Keep in mind that if your grammar and such are off I might ask you to correct it. It doesn’t need to be Shakespeare, but it should be legible.

Caveat: my posting on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays will probably be limited due to commitments I have offline. The other four days should be reasonably consistent though. I may not be able to check on this thread until Friday, just so you are aware (math exam tomorrow).

Looking forward to some RP!

Total: 60

Appearance -

Dylan is not the most intimidating creature one has laid eyes on. Dylan is shorter than average villager, resembling a small red scalled velociraptor with a tuft of black fur on the tip of his tail.

The edges of his face are lined with hard ridges, giving his head an almost V shape.

His body is far from obese but his scales do have some flesh hidden under them, granting him a softer padded look.

Attributes and Personality -

Not vile enough to become a bandit, not good enough to hold down an honest job. Ever since he could work Dylan has bounced from one job in the village to another, some of them even honest. Truth be told Dylan isn't too well known in the village but those that do know him reguard him as a cowardly, gluttonous, kleptomaniac thief, one who alproaches life with a smile and quick wit.

Dylan's charm loses its luster when small objects simply dissapear when he enters a room.

Background -

Dylan was hatched to a poor, but far destitute surfs. His mother, now passed, and his father, also passed to natural causes, had three children. His older brother became a scribe and his sister left the village to find her fortune else where and was never seen from again.

Despite what people may think, Dylan had a happy childhood. His present state of being, having the reputation of a thief, coward, and glutton is a product of his own doing and own poor choices in later life. A reputation that makes it hard to find stable employment. He works slot jobs for people desperate enough for workers that they don't care who they hire as long as the job gets done.

When there is no work Dylan falls to theivery to support himself. It doesnt always pay off though. Now 26 the lizard has spent, collectively, half a year in jail and has at least twice gone to the stockade.

A jack of all trades but he will forever be master of none until he can master his own vices.

Inventory -

Hooded shawl- A tattered leather shawl that rests on the beasts shoulders. It has a hood to keep the rain off of his head.

Sash- A leather sash the lizard wears like a lion cloth. It comes down to his knees both in front and back.

Hatchet-A simple wood cutting hatchet.

Bandolier- wraps over one shoulder and under the next. Used to old various small items and his hatchet.

Lockpicks- Don't ask where he got them...

Dirk- A simple knife.
