Anything where one sticks wings on or adds random dragon parts to something increase its "cool factor". Anything "demonic" or vaguely monstrous (like werewolves) strikes me as overcompensation for one's lack of interesting features. Same with the overly-colourful, tons-of-animal hybrids.

There's no species I think is overused and/or overrated, but there's one adjective for sure: muscular

Overcompensation is definitely a key word in this case, though I can't say I mind it too much, because I think a fursona can be something you want to be more like yourself and how you want to be perceived, as opposed to just your actual self with fur and animal features. Now, when someone goes and makes their fursonas fifty feet tall with bulging muscles everywhere, they're definitely just overcompensating.

When it comes to species, I strangely don't mind the over-use of some of them when I think about it. I really like foxes and wolves as animals, and if somebody feels a wolf or a fox represents them best, more power to them. I almost admire the ones who represent themselves with something like a red fox in a T-shirt and jeans and feel like they don't have to be any more unique than that.

Explain fursonas please. I thought I understood, but my interpretation was that you choose to see yourself one way or another. When you say to "give" them occupations or characteristics, it sound like creating a character. So, is your main fursona typically the one that describes your personality, and your other fursonas are like OCs? Iow, if I say main fursona, I'm talking about me, but if I say fursona, I could be talking about any?

For me it is a half and half sort of thing and I would think it would be for most people. If this fursona was entirely me then I would just put a picture of myself up as an avatar. Halei-Helai has a lot of my same interests, some similar physical features (as far as body proportion goes), and a similar BMI. Her personality is an extension of my own in such a way that it is almost a carbon copy. And yeah, I am not a cosmologer in real life, but if it were possible I would love to be. You should theoretically be able to strike any balance of fact and fiction that you like.

Really it is just the abundance of wolves who have gruff exteriors but hearts of gold or foxes who are very playful and cuddly that makes me sigh just a little bit.

Probably most dog or wolf canines, foxes, and tigers.  They're not bad though, haha.

Foxes and cats seem to be the number one "go to" fursona. I'm interested in why that is but I may never know. Now, as someone with multiple fursonas, they are all unique and are rather uncommon animals or hybrids. What you choose for your fursona is all you.

Yeah, that's definitely a common problem. XP

My phoenix thing I have going on might be a compensation for something considering he's a mystical creature who can't die and fire powers and bla bla bla, though the fursona himself is often depressed so his attitude doesn't empower me as much as he helps me express some stuff.
