Problem with making fat characters
« on: July 07, 2015, 10:05:56 PM »
I've been in sort of a rut lately. I used to draw quite a lot, but now I feel like the only thing I ever want to draw... are fat characters. I don't mind drawing fat characters, but my problem is coming off as a fat fetishist,  which I try to avoid. For example, there is a duo of characters I made up named Henry and Rachael Lashley that I've been putting off drawing for a while because Henry is this incredibly fat creature who's so porcine that his legs are practically invisible except for his feet, while his sister is more or less a polar opposite. Earlier I kind of caved in and drew the two playing fetch for a bit until they spot a caterpillar on the ground. Henry lifts his foot over the caterpillar to make sure he doesn't step on it while Rachael guides the caterpillar onto her fingers so they can put it somewhere else.

Personally, I don't want people to think I'm gross just because I draw a lot of tubbies. But if you ask me, here's my deal: When it comes to art, I see a LOT of fat characters on Fur Affinity. However, I don't fave pictures just because they're fat. When it comes to fat characters, I look for something else. Fat characters aren't these giant deformed blob-like creatures who look absolutely useless and disgusting. Fat characters aren't these walking food vaccums who fart a lot either. And fat characters aren't there for nothing more than to just look fat and ugly. A lot of art I see do just that: they're of formless blobs, fatties stuffing their faces and are overall just showing off their jiggling blubber, which just doesn't do it for me.

To me, fat guys are your best friend. They may sometimes be dumb as a brick, but you can't help but love them for their friendliness. They're these big, squishy balls of happiness who give really good hugs, and they have well intentions to boot.

But fat guys are also these big, strong creatures with impenitrable bellies. Fat guys are tough, imposing and powerful. What they lack in speed, they make up for in strength and being able to laugh at their targets as they hopelessly fire gatling-gun punches away at him.

Those are what I think of when I think of fat characters. Henry is sort of a mix between the two. He's very strong and almost impervious to damage except for his head, yet he's also a loveable sweetheart deep down. Basically I try to ballance out what he lacks in the looks department with having an overall likeable personallity. In addition, there's an alternate version of the character where he's just wearing a suit that makes him look fat, but again because he likes having fat-armor protecting him and he used to be as big until he had to get his fat removed or else he would die. While I do really like these characters, I feel kind of nervous when I draw them a lot, and I worry about how people view me when they see it. Is it wrong that I like fat characters for those reasons, and that I draw them a lot?

They sound like great reasons to draw fat characters and frankly it would be nice to see some more chubbies which aren't completely fetish driven Jabba the Hutt impersonators.

Sadly you will probably attract people who don't understand why you haven't made them spill their food and poop themselves... but make your own artistic vision regardless I say!

That...perfectly describes my best friend. honestly, with this kind of insight, I think your art will do fine. I do so look forward to seeing it.

If it's allowed, I'm actually writing a Pokemon fanfic where the main goodguys are all fat (In addition, the main villain is a, and I quote: "Jabba the Hutt impersonator"), as well as a drawing of the main character, but I don't think linking is prohibited on this forum. There is definitely a fat theme to the story, but I'm trying not to go too far with it.

The Soldier Son trilogy by Robin Hobb, treads this fine line very well if you get the chance to read it.  A great series about "civilization" against nature and the clash of the peoples from both worlds.  And magic makes you fat XD

If the content is NSFW, than linking to that content would be against the rules

It's not. But I thought linking in general was wrong. Okay, if they're allowed can I just link them here, or should I make a new topic in the art section?

If it's a story I'd put it Writing and Literature, if it's art I'd put it in art, if it's both (A story and art) you can pick.

It's technically both, but it's mostly a fanfic, so I'll post it here: http://www.thefurryforum.com/forums/index.php?topic=28969.msg1498286#new

One reason, besides embracing my appreciation for these characters, that I started writing this short story because it feels like the fat guys in media are always villains. I wanted to do something different.

Not all fat people is villan. I know it probably overuse but Santa is a great one for a good fat people list. I know there more but I been running on very very little sleep.

no what i hate is that fat people are either the main protagonist friend, they are the funny one or they are evil... seriously i need something new.

But evil fat people stems from the 7 sins of humanity, with gluttony being one of them. When you think of bad guys the sins are what is always incorporated into them. Greedy, Jealously/ Envy, Lust, Wrath, Pride,Sloth, and  gluttony are always having one or more incorporated into them because by religious belief they are evil.

Seriously find me a bad guy that hasn't done this because there is no way of being evil unless you commit these sins...

However upon reflection there are just some people who do it because they want to.. like the joker.

Ironically, even Mightyfats is kind of guilty of that. Sure, the main heroes are all huge, but even they are pretty much a Greninja compared to the main villain, who's name comes from the fact that he is SO fat that it just droops over. Though the idea was kind of supposed to be "Tasteful Fat Characters VS Fetish-Driven Fat Characters." ...Although I haven't even gone as far with the theme for him. :(

I've been working on Mightyfats and, honestly, I'm starting to get bored. I feel like there's a limit to how many fat characters should be in the story. A hero team that just happens to have one big, fat, legless wrecking ball of armor and strength is starting to sound more appealing to me than a whole team of them. I'm considering starting over with a new story that takes place in Ricky's future where all his comrades have more or less passed away due to their life choice, and Ricky (being the youngest) is the only one left. He moves, finds a new place to settle down, runs his own hero business, but doesn't get much success until the town's most popular hero fails to defeat a large Pokemon that Ricky proceeds to fight off and shame in front of the hole town.

When you write a story that has a fat character, do you feel like there's a limit to how many fat characters should be in the story?
