My uncle is now the same way.
About 6 years ago he got bitten by one, said his left arm felt paralyze for couple hours, couldn't feel nothing but numbness.

Kind of funny at that time I was the one who was scared of spiders. Once I learn about them, started to like them. By now already handled a couple of them.
