need help with a few things
« on: November 25, 2014, 11:40:28 AM »
so i am building a new pc soon just needing help on a few things really

graphics card: i will be putting 2 into sli and i was just wondering what card should i go with the new 900 ones or something like a 780 or 780 ti

SSD and Hard drives: my ssd will be holding my os that will be a 240 GB and i will be getting another @40 for stuff that i need to start fast like chrome video editing stuff and i will be doing video recording so i need a good hard drive that can handle alot of data being written to it

NAS: not sure alot can help with this but would a NAS be worth it to dump files that can be stored somewhere else but not always needed be worth the cash

Since you already have a 780 I'd say the cheapest option is to simply get another.

Otherwise if going for a completely fresh build, 900 series all the way! The 970 is almost as good as the 780TI at a fraction of the price.

---
Samsung, Intel and Crucial are the only SSD brands I really trust. The Samsung 850 Pro is probably the best value currently if you want the highest performance, otherwise the 840 Evo is a great lower-cost option that is almost as fast in practice depending on how much data you are writing to the drive.

For hard drives, Western Digital are my favorites, go for the Black drives if you want really fast hard drives, otherwise the Red drives are the best option for a more cost-effective quiet drive if you want to cram multiple ones into a tight space (great for a server or NAS with a lot of drives).

Be careful with SLI, it can work but doesn't (in general) give you the speed up you'd expect, things like microstuttering and concurrency issues within software with no SLI support can drop your frame rate to only a little better than having the one card, in very rare cases it can actually make the framerate worse! Either way, just remember SLI is NOT like having 2x the power, it's varies from game to game but you'll almost never get twice the power, more 1.5x or so

A NAS is always going to be slower than a directly connected hard drive because of the extra effort involved in delivering your data. I would recommend installing the storage inside this computer and creating a network share on it. Effectively turning it into a NAS box. When you do your editing on it you will be able to utilize the speed of the directly connected drive but you will also be able to access the files elsewhere on your network, though of course you will have to leave your PC on.

I personally would skip going for a NAS and get a RAID 5 going.

the amount of stuff i need to push off to a nas will ruin a hdd plus no bet my brother will want some hard drive space for movies and such (my set of drives will be locked down) and then so will my sister want space so a nas is easy plus if you do the maths

5 bay nas + 5 drives is much cheaper then buying multiple external hard drives and then theres the issue of losing said external HDD's yea ive lost mine had its data removed and someone has pushed theres onto it so thats one thing about a nas the only way to lose data is if the drive fails or the nas is stolen

Seriously try and do a RAID 5 setup
that just means that your data is always safe unless by bad luck, 2 drives fail at the same time.
4x4TB drives in RAID 5 will get you 12TB.
Also I hope you've got a fast home network because those files will take forever to transfer.
Try go for gigabit ethernet.
