Mixed feelings of being apart of the fandom?
« on: July 28, 2014, 02:46:19 AM »
I've been in the fandom for so long, and I had to hide it when I got new friends back in middle school but they loved anime and what not but I still had to hide it due to how much hate furries get. Years later I finally came out that I'm apart of the fandom and like the fursuits and all that, but once I really got back into the fandom I realized just how cringe worthy some of it is. Like it makes me feel abit embarrassed even though I know some are not all cringe. Like I love fursuits, like really love them and I am looking forward to making one one day, but some furs kind of act abit over the top with acting out their fursona especially out of their suit and it's hard to show my friends they are not all bad. Every community has their bad apples like cosplayers, anime lovers, and all that. I mean anime lovers have their cringe worthy people too but it seems furries seem to get the most hate for it. I guess I can say I'm only in the fandom as a type of art form with like the art and fursuits? I'm not much a rping type of furry that acts like my fursona; that was way back in my weeabo days and I would wear a collar when I was 12. I'm almost 17 and just it's hard to be in the fandom knowing about so much of the cringe worthy things that go on. I love the community don't get me wrong! It can be pretty fun and it's great that we've held charities, the media just doesn't see that. Over all I have mixed feelings about calling myself a furry, when I really just enjoy making art and the fursuits. I came into the fandom to get away from judgemental people but looks like I've turned into one too from the group of friends I have been friends with for years... Anyone else felt this way? Sorry if any of my thoughts offended anyone!

First of all, I want to make it clear that the Furry Fandom is a very broad fandom around a large amount of beliefs and interests, so broad that it's relatively uncommon to find any member of it that is 'into' every single aspect. Yes the fandom gets plenty of hate, but from what I've been able to tell so far not as much as furries expect there is. Anyways, you don't have to like every part of the fandom to be a member. Don't like RPing- just fine! Don't like to do a whole fursona thing- no problems! As it's been said many times, but not quite enough yet, the fandom simply revolves around one basic concept; a love of anthropomorphic animals.

Also, your thoughts are far from offending anyone. We don't criticize for others thoughts, and I understand your problem. Plus, interests change over time. If you wake up one day and find that your interest in the fandom has suddenly disappeared, don't worry. It's something that many of us go through at various points in our lives.

Either way, I hope you resolve the problem soon, and want to congratulate you on telling others about your membership. That takes confidence, which I severely lack and personally wouldn't be able to do.

Thank you! I think that really summed up to where I am in the fandom, I really wish to call myself a furry. I was a very proud young furry back in middle school and I guess judgement made me see it differently and it just makes it hard. Nowadays I actually really don't care about how people see it but then again I kind of do. I do want to act all energetic like some do with the whole fursona deal, it seems happy, because I've suffered really bad depression most of my life and the furry fandom changed that and made me a happier person when I was very young. Now that I've hid it I just see it as some sort of cringe worthy thing and I absolutely hate that I see it that way. I'm sure since I'm back in the community my thoughts will ease up abit about the whole thing. I need to surround myself with more furs to experience it the way I felt being in the fandom when I was younger. Last time I had a furry friend was so long ago.

The main thing, I think, is to make sure you're in the fandom for your own sake, that being a furry to you is what it means to you and no one else. Everybody has different views on everything, some people want to go very over the top with their character, that's  there choice and I fully support that, even if it might not necessarily be for me. But the fandom is a single entity, you join and be apart of the fandom for what the fandom means to you, there may be some people in it who disagree, but they don't matter, you're in it because you like fursuiting, you like the furry art, and that's all that's really important.

There are many good people to show your friends, but if they don't need convincing then no need to show them, only if they challenge you on it. But basically the idea is don't worry about what other people do who are in the same fandom, focus on what the fandom means to you and stick to that when figuring out whether you want to be apart of it or not.

I agree entirely, well since I've been back in the community for a few days and now that I think about it, it's not so bad to me. It's all about how it means to me as you said. I felt alittle better today to call myself a furry because my friends messaged me confessing what they are into that would be judged in our group of friends and I think I broke the ice about all of us being ashamed for things we like. They go on 4chan and what not alot so they feed off of what users say and they didn't bother to research about furries till now. So now we all support each other. Thank you guys for putting your insights! It helped me alot knowing where I am in this fandom.
