Another Pokémon thread
« on: June 11, 2014, 10:42:34 PM »
Since the latest one I could find was locked, here's this thread to litter this place with.

Back when I first played pokémon I had no idea what it was all about. The game I started with was ruby. Now I'm going to share my thoughts on each generation.

Pokemon 1

I finished this after ruby.

Dull game that gets tedious midway with the low level enemy spam. There's too much to do and it's not as entertaining to keep going on.  Whenever I replayed it I always stopped when reaching Koga. (Also, the psychic city's tall building with rockets is too large)

Some of the pokémons:
  • Starters: I like Charmander for its looks. Its evolutions are ugly and boring. Squirtle is only useful for anti-psychic, anti-ghost purposes due to bite. Bulbasaur's poison and leech seed is useful against the Elit 4's over levelled monsters, but just only a few of them.
  • Brock can be beaten with a lv13 rattata (hyper fang) and 2 potions.
  • Gengar is actually a failed psychic. It's got more defenses due to poisen/ghost type, its defense stat is higher than Alakazam's and the spec. atk, speed stats are just slightly lower than that psychic's.
  • I played a hack called Emerald Kanto Edition in which each pokémon was replaced by gen 1. In that I beat a lv55 Dragonite with a lv51 Raticate equipped with ice beam. Lol. How can raticate even use ice?
  • On that matter, why does Nidoking learn all water tm moves and gets no poison attacks?
  • Also, I like Ninetales for stalling. Confuse, burn, flame vortex and you can go up against higher level opponents and actaully deal any damage.
Pokémon 2
I don't seem to like it much. Mainly because it's an extension of gen1.

Never finished it. Played a gen3 remake hack of it, but that only extended till the elit 4 and no 1st game gym leaders...

I went with the water starter and got my ass handed to me on many occasions. It failed to be useful. I ended up getting quagsire against the steel gyme and then a 3rd water type, Lanturn in the end because Lanturn is very strong.

Pokémon 3
My favourite for some reason. Finished ruby and emerald many times, but somehow never sapphire.

The gameplay's not so tedious here, but the elit 4 tends to be overpowered. Another negative aspect that the bad guys always have the same 3 pokémon.

Pokémons:
  • Torchic - overpowered. Blaze Kick, Sky Uppercut, Mirror Move. I literally owned the final battles, 1 shot dragons.
  • Mudkip - why is it a meme? Also, not too useful in later parts due to the abundance of water pokémon.
  • Treecko - wait till lv20-something and it learn Mega Drain, then level it up and learn Razor Leaf right after. Is also good against psychics and can learn dragon claw. Champion's Milotic in emerald still hurts it badly.
  • Zigzagoon - pick up, HM slave
  • Psyduck - HM slave 2
  • Ralts - not so colourful to me...
  • Cradily - great staller when taught Toxic, not many gyms could do anything against it
  • Lanturn, again - very powerful
Pokémon 4
Just finished recently.

Big let down. It's like they just recycled the previous games then added some new pokémon to make it look like they did anything. There's the usual zubat spam, followed by gyarados spam. The bad guys now had like 5 pokémon they always used instead of 3. The dungeons/paths were extra long and extra tedious.

The game bombards you with easy fights than gets way too difficult. I reached level 45 on average with a team of 5 by the end only to struggle against lv60 opponents and cheat using save states to win. I could barely deal any damage with my strongest attacker. It was a waste of time.

My team was:
  • Infernape - meh
  • Roserade (hi there recycled gen3!) - start with toxic spikes, then growth, after getting damage: giga drain, when jacked up enough shoot petal dance and kill everything
  • Mismagius - proved completely useless in the final battle, not even perish song could help
  • Gyarados - was hard to die, but too weak
  • Weavile - could 1 shot 1 out of 6 champion's pokémon (Roserade)
Pokémon 5

I really liked this one. I liked how the experience was limited, there was more emphasis on the story and no earlier gen pokémon were present. Didn't play after the N/Getsis final battle, but I'm thinking of replaying it.

  • Snivy - Why is it that I can use stat up moves without any punishment? (drain back lost HP)
  • Yamask - sounds interesting with the burn, hex combo.
  • Haxorus - weaker than what I'd expected
  • Scolipede - became useless by the end
  • Krookodile - power house

Pokemon Crystal was my first game, which is probably why Gen 2 is my favourite.
I would probably rank the gens from best to worst like this:

Gen 2
Gen 3
Gen 6
Gen 4
Gen 5
Gen 1

I also really like the mystery dungeon games which i think are better than most of the main games in my oppinion.

I've been playing the games since '98, and I'd honestly say Gen V is still my most favorite Pokemon experience out there.

-The best story that we've seen in a Pokemon game thus far, across *two* games.
-The entire first game was nothing but the new Pokemon, no need to augment with a few older ones here and there.
-The second game included a mix of old and new, giving us at the time the most amount of Pokemon variation we've seen pre-end game.
-A good mix of characters, both good and bad, minus a few in the second game.
-All that fine tuning, from TM's being infinite use, a quick-use menu, and the ability to reuse repels by a simple pop-up.
-It helped influence my current Pokesona!

Honestly my only complaints about the fifth Gen would be that in both games, a good chunk of the region is locked until Post-Game, and even then once you get there you can't help but feel ripped off. That and, way too much forced tutorial, especially in the second game. We really don't need to learn about their version of Hollywood and Joint Avenue unless we actually plan on using them.

Other than that, I'd say that Gen VI is my next favorite, followed by the Gen IV remakes, then Gen II, the entire Gen III, Gen IV main games, then Gen I.

Being the resident Dewott, I can say that I love Pokemon, ever since '98

I'm with this guy, excluding the Dewott part. Charmeleon for me y'all.

I've been playing since the "glory days" of the series. I didn't own my own game until 2002 though, when I got crystal. I have owned every single subsequent game and at least half of the spin offs. I do competitive battling and constantly replay the story mode of my games with little challenges for myself. I also play the TCG, owning more than 2000 cards, more than half collected in the past 8 months.

My top five favorite Pokemon are Charmeleon/Charizard, Tyrantrum, Latios/Latias, Garchomp and Vaporeon. As if it needs mentioning, my favorite type is dragon with an extremely close second in fire. I don't have a favorite game, but Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will likely take the mantle, what with Hoenn being my favorite region due to the environment. My favorite Spin-off series would be Mystery Dungeon, and I tend to get brave, hardy or docile natures in the first two iterations.

Now that I've shutup about myself, let's get friend codes out yo. Mine is 5086-2107-8438
