Game design, anyone?
« on: May 21, 2014, 04:30:33 PM »
Is there a board for this? I dunno, I'll put it here.

Anybody else have any experience/stories related to game or level design?

When I was at job corps, we used to play tons of games when our classes sucked (always). At one point, we started developing a Doom wad to recreate the job corps center in game. Playable classes for three trades, half the center was a playable map.

Would have been beautiful, if it wasn't leaked to the CD who forced us to quit xD

I've made a few games here and there XD Nothing entirely big or note worthy though

I made a guitar hero game in Basic
I made a text based adventure game that was pretty long
I made settlers of Catan in C, for school XD
I've made a couple of campaigns using Knitt Stories
I've made a few Garrysmod mods

Other than that not really much, which is unfortunate, I should make more games xD

I'm looking into making a much larger scale game than I've done before. I think it'd be pretty damn cool to have a game I created/helped create featured somewhere. Never used 3D, so that's probably the biggest obstacle x.x

I'm already pretty good with sprites, honestly. 3D seems like it'd be too much work for something I probably could achieve with sprites in the first place.

Actually, doom 2 is where most of my sprite experience comes from. New weapons were easy, enemies were a little tougher but still simple once you got everything down.

I'm working on something at the moment, involving dragons and corrupted politicians. Kind of an experiment, as to what I can do with some of the new programs I have.

Game design is more about design than actually creating the game, that's what I've learned.

Programming is important, but the most important thing is making your game fun, you usually have such awesome ideas in your head, but once they come to be, a lot of people might not like it for one reason or another. The control scheme mightn't be intuitive, the story might be confusing, the gameplay mightn't be fun for some people. The true hardship of making a game is being able to sacrifice your image, the thing you have in your head, being able to change that and sacrifice it so it's inclusive for the community around you.

=============================

I'm currently working on a MazeGame in Java (for uni), where you have to go through a maze, avoid enemies and collect treasure. It's no where near finished but here's just some pics of what it currently looks like

(KEY
White = SPACE
Black = WALL
Purple = PLAYER
blue = START LOCATION
green = END LOCATION
red = ENEMY (two types but they look the same for now)
yellow = TREASURE
pink = HEALTH)

Here's just the title screen, currently doesn't resize well (When the game is running it resizes)
Spoiler for Hidden:

Here's the game on "easy difficulty"

Here's the maze on "medium difficulty"

Here's the maze on "Hard difficulty"

Another maze on "Hard difficulty" to show you the maze generation truly is random

Here's a game I've been developing with a few friends for two weeks. Because of a bunch of set backs and most of my team members not doing anything, it's not a very polished version of the game. It works just fine but enemy AI could probably be improved and more interesting graphics (and sound effects) could of been added.

You can download the game here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/1ab91b7cp00wodi/MazeCraze.zip

To install the game simply download the .zip and extract all files into any directory. Make sure all files are in the SAME directory on the SAME level, if they are not then a lot of things in the game will be invisible and you may get a FileNotFound exception!  To play the game simply double click on the .jar file, it should run on any system. Your browser may warn you the file could be a virus, I assure you it is not a virus but the computer warns you about this because the file is a .jar.
