Here's a little short story I wrote. It's the first one I've shared, and I hope you like it.
The Hill
Marcus sat on the hill. He looked up at the stars, gazing at the white river they called the Milky Way. It was the second most beautiful thing he'd ever seen in his life, and he was sure he wasn't going to regret being up so late on a work night.
Hearing a shuffling sound to his left, Marcus turned. Surprisingly, the first most beautiful thing was walking up the hill in his direction.
"Leila! I didn't think I'd see you here!" he exclaimed.
"Hi, Mark." she giggled. She was wearing a white dress, one Marcus had never seen before. Her shoulder-length blonde hair waved in the wind, though Marcus couldn't feel any.
"What's with the dress? You look beautiful." he asked.
"Thanks." Leila said, not answering his question. She laid down, looking at the stars in the same way her boyfriend had been before she interrupted him. "So, how was work today?"
Marcus sighed. "Don't get me started. Have I told you about Jack yet? He's Dylan's son, and he's been coming to work every day this week. I keep catching him trying to mess with some of the code, whether he's been meaning to or not."
"Ah, well," Leila concurred, "kids will be kids. Trust me, you should see my cousin Alex. Now that High School's over, I had to look after him all the time."
They talked for a long time, sharing many laughs and a lot of love. Even after all the movies they'd seen, the picnics they'd had, and the times they'd been to each other's houses, tonight was special. Surprising though it was, somehow it was the best time either of them had ever had in their whole lives.
"Really? You'd be perfect for that! I can't believe they didn't hire you!" Marcus exclaimed.
"Yeah," Leila laughed. Then she sighed. "Too bad, job hunting was kinda fun..."
Marcus sat up. "What's wrong?"
Leila looked to him sadly. "Marcus, I have to go."
Marcus smiled. "Okay, then. See you tomorrow!"
"No, I mean... I have to go." She put a strange emphasis on the 'go'.
Frowning, he asked, "Wh... but why? You can room with me, you don't have to follow your parents to Michegan!"
"Mark, I'm not going with my parents..."
"Then stay here!"
She had a pained look in her eyes. "No, I... I can't."
"Then let me come with you!"
"You can't, either..."
Marcus stood up. "Look, Leila, I love you. You know that. Why do you want to leave so badly?"
Leila stood up, too. "Mark, I don't want to, but I have to." Then she walked off the hill.
Not down it, off it.
As she walked on air, the white band of the Milky Way opened up, and Marcus could see other people, also wearing white clothes. He could see angels flying through the air, and a large figure... was it...?
Leila looked back. "Goodbye, Marcus. I love you too."
Marcus woke up, unaware the stars had shifted. They had appeared this way before he woke... but was it a dream?
Confused, he made his way down the hill, to his car. As he drove back to his apartment, he noticed flashing red and blue lights up ahead. Curious, he turned down the street to find police investigating an... accident...
...he recognised that car...
Marcus pulled over and jumped out of his car. He rushed over to the red Sedan, hoping he didn't alarm the officers. Panicking, he looked into the driver seat window and saw a woman about as old as he was.
She had shoulder-length blonde hair and a familiar face.
Marcus began to cry. One of the officers tried to calm him down. They asked if he knew the woman.
"Leila... Leila Adams... 1221 Sycamore Street... she was my... my..."
The officer nodded. "I'm sorry to hear that, sir. I understand. I'm afraid there's nothing we can do, this happened long before we arrived."
Tears still in his eyes, Marcus looked up to the Milky Way, where he knew his lost love had gone after sharing one last night together.
