Back to a Civilian...
« on: July 20, 2012, 12:11:13 AM »
I've been in the military for the last six years. Yesterday, I was discharged from a way of life I've come to know and love, and left against my will due to medical issues. I returned home after 3 years, and now, I really have no clue on how to feel, what to think, or what to do. I've been home barely a full day and my friends and family already say I will have a hard time transitioning to our hometown and atmosphere because I'm just 'too military'.

I know I should be happy and excited about being home finally and for good, and to an extent, I am. But its overshadowed often by feelings of longing for my job and shipmates, loneliness, and feeling incredibly lost. I've been trying to figure out how to divide my attention between my family, friends, boyfriend, and Master because it seems everyone wants my time and when I try to give attention to one, the others clamor in on it and make each other mad. I understand where they're coming from and their excitement, but its not like I haven't been in touch and keeping everyone up to date on my day to day life.

I feel rather naked and lost without my uniform, or having a known agenda for the day. Everyone expects me to pick going right back to work, or going straight to school, when I don't even know what to do, how to do it, or what I'm feeling. X__X

Mreww.. any other furs ever had their paws in these boots before? ;w;

I currently am in the military and I do run a what-if situation every now and then similar to how you are now. So I see what you're going through, but I don't understand it fully either since I'm not currently in that situation.

I know I'd feel pretty much the same in that I wouldn't have an agenda, I would feel odd in not wearing my uniform at certain times.

I had a habit running 'what ifs' throughout my career. I had planned on doing the 20+ years, making it a career, but still.. that 'what if' was always there. So I did make some plans. I put money away to live on until I figure out what to do, how to do it. I've networked with companies in and out of the government. When the medical issues started, I started putting away more money and started using Tuition Assistance so I would have my GI Bill for afterwards.

This morning I jumped out of bed alarmed I was late and began to put on my uniform before I realized I wasn't going anywhere. When I was out visiting family, I started getting antsy because.. I dunno. It was fun but I didn't feel I was 'gainfully employing' myself. Not too mention I kept dropping f-bombs and other words left and right. X__X

The TAP program they run is good for prepping for job searching, but not really all that good for offering advice on transitioning. Cause yea.. I've always had the thought but actually going through it, when it was the last thing you wanted.. its odd. The DOD forgot to put out instruction for that. =x

Yeah, they do not have a true program for helping in "Transitioning to Civilian" because they've worked so hard to train you the way they want you to be.

I know. All that bootcamp time to transition you into what they want but you're on your own to get back. x3 Can be oh so typical but oh wells.

So what branch are you in?

I'm Air Force as well. Everytime I go on leave I feel bored. As in, I have fun with my family and all that, but not having a structured day to day schedule bores me. If I were ever to leave the military I'd have to have some sort of rigid work schedule or something to feel better. I've often thought about it too, but I enjoy what I'm doing way too much to go home and live an ordinary life.

So yeah, my advice is to find some other sort of structured lifestyle that you can invest your time in. And really it all comes down to time. After awhile you'll get used to this new lifestyle and be right as rain again. Sorry to hear about the medical turnback though. I hope you find your calling in something else equally as awesome.
