Plus, going by sub-genre is a good way to learn about bands that sound like the bands you enjoy.  If you say you like rock, you get a painful barrage of anything from the Beatles to Nickelback to Fang Island.  But if you tell me "I like avant-garde metal", I can suggest a few specific bands for you.

This is exactly why I love sub-genres, because I hate when I sense people get the wrong ideas. I've had a genre as crazy as this once: "brutal blackened experimental death metal".

lol.. 'progressive death metal' why're gojira progressive? their songs don't really progress. music labeling is so stupid

He's a metal fan, of course he's going to know the Wikipedia-correct genre (I tend to label my genres by the Wiki default).  At some point, you amass so much of an all-encompassing genre (like metal, rock, etc.) that you decide "____ doesn't sound like ____; I need some sub-genres".

Plus, going by sub-genre is a good way to learn about bands that sound like the bands you enjoy.  If you say you like rock, you get a painful barrage of anything from the Beatles to Nickelback to Fang Island.  But if you tell me "I like avant-garde metal", I can suggest a few specific bands for you.

i know this, but it's gotten to such a point where the words just mean nothing. what does 'progressive' mean, and how are gojira progressive? i don't understand.
The further on I go, all the less i know.

I always take progressive as going outside the norms of a genre (in regards to time signatures/sudden time changes, instruments used), but not so much that it would count as another genre.

I've found another good death metal track, this one is called Skinless- Execution of Reason.   >:3

So we're not allowed to have metal-related discussion?  It has to be specifically death metal, and swooning over the self-hyped music you post?

Okay.

It's your thread, I wouldn't ask you to change anything about it.  But we (Josh and I) are both clearly fans of death metal (and other kinds of metal), and discussing an aspect of a death metal band (what it means to be progressive death metal).  My knowledge of the genre might not be as encyclopedic/obsessive as yours, but at least we're participating.

Alright, thankyou MiltoniusPrime for clarifying that with me.  :|
I have some nice Progressive Death Metal If you'd like to check It out, consider It an apology for my mistake.
Augury - Oversee the Rebirth (FULL SONG)
(I accidently misplaced this into one of the quotes, so I decided to get rid of them)

so by that token, dillinger escape plan are progressive? i don't understand

and this is a perfectly civil discussion about death metal... i'm not entirely sure what else it could be seen as but never mind

finally, that augury track is pretty cool actually... i like the guitar in the opening. isn't it amazing how near enough everybody listens to music that's heavily heavily influenced by jazz, but no one wants to listen to jazz? maybe people're really missing something they'll genuinely enjoy.

on that subject... anyone ever heard of john zorn? he was a saxophonist who astonished the world with his phenominal technique, and then made a death metal album with the guys from napalm death.

I've been doing some more searching on youtube, found a truly great music video from Amon Amarth,
the song is called Guardians of Asgaard, and the music video is truly worth seeing.  :D
Amon Amarth - "Guardians of Asgaard" Metal Blade
And I also found a cool track from Nightrage's upcoming album Insidious,
Nightrage-Wrapped In Deceitful Dreams (feat. Gus G. and Tom S. Englund)

Here is some interesting experimental black/death metal I've found recently. It's sorta a bit boring, but it sounds really cool and that's what keeps me into it.

Personnaly, I'm more towards either symphonic death metal with bands such as Children of Bodom (I qualify them in that branch but I don't know if they really are o.O), Scar Symmetry and so on or some Vicking death metal with bands such as Amon Amarth :3

But a band that I like and is from Quebec, specificly from Montreal is the band "The Agonist"... Kind of a melodic death Metal/Metalcore band... Here's two songs of them I like:

Here's "Thank You, Pain", more into their Metalcore stuff:

THE AGONIST - Thank You Pain (OFFICIAL VIDEO)

And "Waiting Out The Winter", getting into their melodic stuff:

The Agonist - Waiting Out The Winter
Be an Angel, play like a Devil... Rock is my live, so I'll be a Badass Angel.
