Your furry folder... Security & Organisation
« on: August 18, 2010, 12:03:39 AM »
This is basically a thread from FChan a while back, but what is your furry folder like organisation & security wise?
As for me, my folder is pretty organised, with like 100 subfolders for each category of art and literature, which I really need to clean out, it's reaching around 10GB.
As for the security, I hid the folder in a truecrypt volume which I'd disguised as a windows file  , eg msxwin32.dll, and that was stuffed in the WINDOWS folder of my PC. It's backed up onto a DVD and several external harddisks.
Alot of effort maybe, but I don't want some of the more questionable stuff found by nosy technicians and family.

mine's just one big folder where i randomly pick a spot and browse through it every now and again... reaching 2GB now, nowhere near your collection!

however i think my music folder would stamp all over yours, but that's another topic

I hide my stuff in plain sight labelled either under "Furr," for my art, or "Furries" for the wallpapers I've found. If anyone finds these small collections of my furry art or furry wallpapers, or some of my furry writing, then fine. It's not the end of the world.
"Parents always think kids are wasting their youth, and always have done [so] down through the millennia," says Tom Forsyth of RAD Game Tools. "'That Ug, always holding things. His front paws will develop in funny ways. Why can't he walk on all fours like normal proto-hominids?' And so, whatever the kids spend the most time doing, that's always what parents think is a waste of time, and what is corrupting their lives. It doesn't matter what that is. If all they did was homework, parents would be worrying that their kids aren't becoming well-rounded people. And, in fact, parents do this - enrolling math nerds in karate classes and the like. There is no way to win - parental paranoia ensures that kids are always doing the wrong thing."

The only reason my furry folder is 10GB is because I haven't gotten around to clearing it out. Which is probably best, makes it look less suspicious...

I stuck all the questionable stuff in a folder called "tree identification", and grouped each category and file extension in different folders according to parts of a tree. Then changed the file extensions so as to be broken (until I choose to temporarily change them back), as well as the names of the files to different types of trees. The special stuff that I particularly didn't want to forget I named in a number language I created.

I've always been extra stealthy ever since the day I was kicked out of a homeless shelter onto the street (after they tried to have me committed), all because of my furry sketchbook that they rooted out of my bag. I don't take anymore chances.

All my furry stuff just sits in my laptop... Art under the chosen print title and books under the chosen book title in my office documents... Nobody gets on my laptop but me because 1) it's mine and 2) it's nearly 12 years old

I just use my favorites on DA and FA. My decrepit computer can't handle a lot of files, and well... I have nothing to really hide.
My artwork is in one folder, where it's separated into:

- Icons (Personal Icons I made for myself or made by someone else for me.)
- Drawings
- Portfolio (My digital portfolio that I used to get into college.)

Trades: Open for Icons and Chibis! :D
Commissions: Open for Icons, Chibis, and general art work! Just ask!

I don't bother hiding anything, mostly because other people don't use my computer and if someone ever needs to borrow it for something, they won't have access to my files anyway. That and meh, I don't have much to hide really.

If I did want to hide something like that though, I'd probably scatter the data around into several separate password-protected and encrypted archives within another encrypted archive with each archive having a different password containing at least 8 characters (none of them containing words for someone to dictionary attack again) and there'd be several archives to act as dummies filled with useless data that takes up roughly the same space.
Next I'd place this in an encrypted volume using something like Truecrypt, making sure to use up additional space with junk data and to use a long password with as large a variety of characters as possible. Then this volume that contains the archive that contains all the archives would be placed in a hidden directory somewhere in the filesystem, the permissions would be set so that no user (except root, of course) would have read, write or execute permissions.l This would naturally be on one of my main partitions, and I tend use filesystems Windows (and Mac OS X) can't read for most of my data.
If I really wanted to make it secure though I'd then create a separate partition, use a filesystem that both supports encryption and isn't widely used, encrypt the filesystem with another completely different password that should prevent most cracking attempts. Finally, to jack up the security to truly paranoid levels I'd password protect both the bootloader and the BIOS (I'm aware of the downsides of using passwords in BIOS, but it still adds an extra layer of protection).

...oh and of course, the laptop itself would be hidden, preferably locked away when not in use :3
The farewell was premature. My definite stay is not definite. The constants are variable. The greeting was too late.

My art folders are in plain sight on my external hard drive so pretty much no worrying on my part. My mom has already gone through my web history in the past so no use in trying to hide anything :/.

Dat, do what I did with mine. Put it all in a folder by itself and change the names and file extensions. Anyone can do it, you don't have to be a computer expert lol.

I don't really have a furry folder, but I do keep all of my commissions and request pictures in the "My Pictures" folder, which I wouldn't care if someone found anyways because I already showed my character to my family, it's "Just an online character I have." So nothing can really come of it even if it was found :P
