I don't think replies reset, I believe they stay constant to when they were made. So reply number 3 would still be reply number 3 even if reply number 2 was deleted.

I just tested it (you can't see my test post because it was removed obviously!)
It does go down, so if post #2 was removed #3 would become #2 and so on..
