Me too, so I'm just going to say that it was a reasonable assumption for the US that the Tu-22M Backfire was a modified version of the Tu-22 Blinder, because an "M" usually designates a modification, while the Tu-22M was in fact a completely new aircraft because it was more convenient for the Tupolev design bureau to give the aircraft an "M" designation than to treat it as a new aircraft entirely.

Well, they didn't break it. They just called a modification if an existing aircraft, even though it was an entirely new one, because that would just be more convenient.
