That's a nice choice of species.
And good luck with the design and stuff, it's always a bit tricky to really get it right. ^^

As for me, when I designed my 'sona, I just went with having the main fur be the same colour as my real hair colour and then adding a bunch of different shades of brown along with it. Not the most creative approach, but it is what makes me happy.
And after all, that's the most important part.
