It depends...

Most modern chainsaws have lots of safety mechanism helping prevent lots of somewhat sensible people from injuring themselves.

But, there's nothing preventing you from running a chainsaw while the damn thing hasn't been greased for over a year... >_>

If you do it correctly, you don't actually need to be afraid of chainsaws themselves. The person handling them can cause more problems.
