Before I knew better I thought everyone spelled it the same and only the pronunciation was different. I was all "duh Muricans, too many syllables?".

I never like hearing I'm wrong, but after that sting to the ego I do like becoming less wrong.


I don't know if I'll ever be right, but I do hope to one day be barely wrong. :D

The tldr is that octopus isn't a Latin word so using a Latin plural isn't justified and even if it was isn't necessarily a good reason anyway.


But I grew up saying octopi, so it's still a reflex.

The thing with it is that it hasn't been resolved.  So it's basically equally valid for the plural to say octopi, octopus, octopuses and octopodes.  It just isn't right to insist upon octopi as some people do.


Also I've got a term for machine based 'sonas:  whirries.
