It's actually how their character designers purposely gave them clown-like features to give them a more humerous side, as well as aid in a scary/uncanny side, and also their slightly out of proportion/unhealthy looks, like their fat bellies, and weird broken necks.
I think they actually have the potential of being astounding characters, both aesthetic, and story-wise, but this representation, as it is now, just ruins that opertunity for them.
But that's not really important...
