Reason that clowns might be scary could just be the good ol' failure to identy facial expression.

Some study indicated that scertain people are just better at reading facial expressions than others, wich might explain why certain people who aren't as good in it get easily off-thrown by a bunch of facepaint.

Just a speculation and such.
