I've noticed that playing on higher difficulties doesn't always make me happy. Sure, it's harder and achievements are worth more, but overall I enjoy playing more casually.

I don't really like too competitive or hard games either.
The only one I regularly play on hard (and have gotten pretty darn good at) is Binding of Isaac.
The rest are mainly just ones I play at my own pace or "my own way". (Like my shiny hunting obsession with pokemon. It adds the right kind of challenge for me.)

I like it when I die or otherwise lose every so often, when I'm not paying attention or have moved to a new location, that sort of thing. Then it's just right. Don't want to die randomly one shot by a minor monster, don't want to just one shot everything either.

That was not the problem. The problem was enjoying the storyline. The first time I got that green ghost after me I was terrified. I dont like haunted areas, and I -really- don't like evil sprits of that sort.

Also, the icicles falling from the ceiling only did 88 damage. The avalances were the real problem.

Avalanches could be easily dodged with your eyes open. But when I was sitting there trying to 100% the area all the 88 damage added up quickly.

Leafeons always looked so delicate to me.  Like if I pet them then the leaves might crack.  Makes me scared to pet them.
