The fruit only got the name in 1974, when New Zealand started exporting it.  So in a sense Kiwi (as a term for NZ things) comes from the bird and the fruit name "kiwifruit" comes from that general use but is then abbreviated to kiwi.


But they are fluffy.  I like to eat them unpeeled sometimes.  It makes me think of biting into a giant spider.


They are also called Chinese gooseberries.
