Only time that has happened to me was when I forgot to cancel recurring subscription on a game >_>
Not paypals fault, but my own and the game company's for not specifying clearly that I had to cancel it separately.

Companies will do that to squeeze everything they can out of the system from people forgetting and/or not knowing how to cancel subscriptions. It's a cheap exploit.
