In a pickle.
« on: August 14, 2011, 02:11:21 AM »
My mom likes to drink on the weekends, and when she does, she turns into someone else. She acts really angry, and then the next minute she has no idea what's going on. I've asked her kindly to not drink so much (and we even made a pinky promise), but when the weekend comes around, she just keeps doing it! Whenever she does, I have to isolate myself from her in order to keep myself away from getting yelled at or smacked. She says when she drinks she's "relaxed" and "having fun" but I think it's a huge issue in my family. If someone has experience with these kind of issues, please help!!!

~Alicia the smicia.

PS. It's so bad I feel I have to hide her alcohol from her.

Clearing things up: I'm not living in N. Korea currently. My parents (miraculously) escaped there and came to the US from South Korea. So I'm a miracle-worker I guess. XD I luv my parents. They be awesome.

Maybe you and your family could sit her down and talk to her about it?

I just talked to my dad about it, and he will definitely talk to her. :)

Everybody needs their own way to relax but this sounds quite damaging. She doesn't need to give it up, rather she just has to drink in moderation. Moderation is the key :3

In my experience, the person needs to see how damaging they are when they aren't in their right mind. With my dad, it was a very sobering moment where he actually got in trouble with the police, but maybe you could show her how she isn't how she usually is when she drinks.

Take a video of her when she is sober and when she isnt.  Show her when she is sober so she can see how she is. Maybe that will help.

"Moderation" solves nothing for people with drinking problems. If your mother can't control how much she drinks or how she behaves when she's drinking, the habit needs to be dropped - period. A family intervention and trying to get her to kick the habit with just all your support would be the first step, and if that fails or falters there's a lot of professionals and a lot of good programs for help that you can turn to. Might want to talk to an expert either way.

Thanks for all the help everyone. My dad has talked to my mom, and he said he'll stop buying alcohol on the weekends for a few months and will see what happens. By the way, my mom is not an addict, but it seems like she's becoming one.
