What Makes a Leader?
« on: July 28, 2011, 05:59:32 AM »
As of late, and part of the cause of my limited activity, I have been needing to ask myself that question repeatedly. To further on this thread and the reason why I ask is that I have been thrust into the mantle of leadership (without attaining the rank yet) to control my particular shift for my shop since I would be the highest ranking individual left on shift for a while. Most of the time, I have been rather reliant on the true shift-leads (usually present) and if questions arose, I have had the need to ask them. But now they are telling me to make my own judgement calls on questionable situations and use the information I have at my disposal to enforce my judgement calls.

Since I am not of a rank that would be able to enforce any form of authority among my shift-peers (most of them below me due to time-in-rank only), it would be difficult for me to accomplish anything on my shift without becoming what I do not wish to become, a pain-in-the-butt leader (usually more colorful terminology, but abiding by the Forum Rules as best as I can for this).

The most generic answers I have heard about "what makes a leader a leader" is that they have to be: Strict, yet compassionate. Strong, yet caring. Tolerating, yet unwavering.  All of these speak to me is that a leader has to be a "balanced" individual, but I would like to learn further on what should be the aspects of a leader, or at least what everyone thinks should be the aspects of a good one.

a leader, to me, is someone who trys to keep the place running, even if theyre not sure how to all the time. a leader doesnt have all the answers, but they'll tell you what to do in the meantime until they can get one. dont be afraid to talk sternly to people if they mess up, they'll listen. I believe in you Vosur, you will be a great leader.

I do not quite feel like I am at that point, but I am going to be thrust into the mantle whether I am or not.

As an administrator of this forum, part of my job is acting as a leader for both the staff and forum members. I do my best to make sure that the forum rules are upheld, that the atmosphere here is of a standard that Tweak and I both find acceptable, fix problems, make sure the staff is doing what they're supposed to do, and do my part to contribute to the betterment of the forum. While this is part of my job, I still want to have fun and take part in the forum myself, and it's not always easy to have to tell people what to do all the time. I'm also forced to make judgment calls about what is or isn't okay all the time.

Now, I know this is just an online thing that's for fun, but it does have a lot of similarities to what you're talking about, so I'm using it as an example.

Someone is always going to have to be making the judgment calls. If it wasn't you, it would be someone else. And when making these kind of judgment calls, all you can do is weigh your options, think about the possible outcomes, and decide which will be the more respectable, honest, or right thing to do (depending on the situation). Then hope for the best. If it's a particularly tricky situation, consider consulting someone else to weigh in another opinion as well, be it anyone above or below you. I don't know exactly how it works of course, but I can't imagine that just because you're ranked above other people doesn't mean you can't ask for their opinion. It can also show that you care about or respect what those below you think.

It's not always necessary to be a "pain-in-the-butt" leader to get things done. Rather than describing a leader as "strict, yet compassionate," I say it's more like "strict, but fair." Do your job, and do it well, and people will come to respect you. Telling people what to do doesn't require you to be a jerk about it either. They don't always like it, but be firm and assert your authority when it is necessary.

I hold myself to these standards when I work as an admin, and things work out well enough. I'm not perfect, but I try to do what I can and stick to my standards. I've heard multiple people complain about me being strict, as well as multiple comments that I'm firm, but fair. People don't always like me and aren't always happy with me because I tell them what to do when I need to, but such is the nature of the beast. If I was the kind of person to encourage people to just do "whatever", the rules would be broken and abused, people would be even unhappier because they wouldn't receive the kind of staff attention the way they do now, trolls and spam would be everywhere, and the forum would be so disorganized you wouldn't be able to find anything.

I'm quite happy with the way this forum is run. When Tweak and I do our jobs, it allows the moderators to do their jobs. When the moderators do their jobs, it allows the forum to stay in proper shape, in order, and easy to use. There will always be people who feel a need to butt heads with authority, but do what you need to do, and you should be fine.

Long answer is long.  :P

Well, got a 1-day crash-course in leadership (to my dismay)... the shift leads decided to no longer "exist" for the rest of the week. I cannot ask for help from them nor can I ask for advice from them. Most of the day went fairly well, end-of-shift did not. When it was within the last hour from leaving from work, they decided to do two things that made their actions speak much louder against their words.

1: When I was in the process of correcting a mistake I made in delegating responsibilities, they took it upon themselves to start taking charge again by not allowing me to correct the mistakes on my own. How am I to acknowledge their "non-existence" if they are getting in the way?

2: When the mistake was corrected, they went on to give instruction to have the others leave without my knowing that the shop responsibility had been turned over to the next shift. I saw that they were leaving without having been given "the word to go from the shift lead" (of which I was supposed to be the individual) and so they showed me that I have no authority.

So, to sum up today's experience in leadership: "First one in, last one out."
