Meanwhile, somewhere far away, but not very. At a time months in the past, but not many.
"Ughh"
Lying on the ground in a pile of rubble was a fox, perhaps 15 or 16, but he didn't remember. He couldn't remember anything, not even his own name. Above him was a gigantic hole from the surface to wherever he was. It was about 100 feet wide and 600 feet deep, too steep to climb, and edged with protruding metal and rock faces. And judging by the pain in his entire body, he wouldn't have been able to climb out anyways.
Managing to get the energy to get up, he examined his surroundings. He was in a pile of rubble and mutilated machinery. Several of the larger rocks had missed his body by a matter of inches, and as a result of these he concluded that he had only survived through a feat of sheer luck. To his right and up about 10 feet was a tunnel, perhaps dug recently. He tried to get up and walk over there, but a sharp pain shot through his right leg.
As the pain subsided, he looked at the leg to find it bloody and bent in an odd direction. It must be broken. He heaved himself up, taking great pain not to agitate his leg, and looked around for a pole that a good size for him to lean on. Fortunately he saw one nearby and picked it up.
Limping across the crater, he got to the tunnel and found it to be a sewage hole. The water had mostly drained out, but a mud-like river of garbage and rainwater remained. Stepping through it, he found an odd object touch his leg. To his horror, he found it to be a mutilated arm. He let out a small scream and run-limped away.
After walking for a few minutes, or what seemed like hours, he came upon an access ledge. Pausing for a moment to rest, he looked up to the surface. The ladder climbing up there was rusty and bent, but he might be able to get up there. First, though, he would need to look at his wounds and try to address them.
Looking around for anything that could help, he noticed a conveniently-situated first-aid kit behind a panel of glass. He took the makeshift crutch and shattered the glass with it. Taking out the crowbar, he heard the sound of water sloshing behind him, and turned around to find a person missing an arm, attempting to attack him. Doing the only thing he could, he stabbed it with his crutch/crowbar/spear, and watched as it toppled to the ground, probably dead. Looking at the blood-covered metal bar he wondered to himself, what have I done?
He took the first aid package, worrying over the death of the person, and began to wrap his leg in bandages. He grabbed a broken piece of the nearby ladder and used it to support his leg. There goes his most urgent medical problem. Perhaps he can look at the others later. Every part of his body still hurt.
As he began to climb up the tall ladder, he heard a groan from behind him.
