An original sci-fi story.
« on: July 17, 2009, 05:52:59 AM »
Here is a short, yet sweet summary about my idea. A kid is having a normal day in the year 2009. He was hanging with his friends for a few hours, but then decided to go home. Suddenly, poof. He finds himself in the same area he was living. Just one thing. The year is no longer 2009, but 2409. A race of anthropomorphic animals have enslaved the human race during the four-hundred-year time skip and a group of rebels expect the kid to be the solution to their problem. The teen was transformed from an average human into a morphing super-soldier and he soon becomes the leader of a human rebellion against the majority of society. Once the war was over and peace had been established, he became an integral member of the government, helping reconstruct society on the inside. The change is going to be hard, but it eventually gets accomplished. There will be some major bad language, gory violence, and possibly a sex scene. I haven't decided on that bit. If there is another story like this one out there, please let me know. Constructive criticism only, please.
Some call me the cutest, blue, samurai furball. I call myself Azul. I serve and protect, but I'm not a cop. I write my own music, but I cannot sing it. I like running, but I'm not fast. I'm not overweight, but I'm not the hottest fox/wolf around. I do my own thing, but I conform sometimes. I respect the government, but I stick it to the man too. I'm a good boy, but I can be bad too. I have a choice, but I'm set on a path. Those last words were for you and me.

there are plenty of stories that have bits of your story. the normal human turned into the futuristic super-soldier against fantasy creatures (Quantum Gravity series by Justina Robinson), Person shooting through time into a world of furries (Planet of the Apes), political jiggery pokery to get peace (all manner of books)

but the thing is no story is original anymore, but the way you present it is

also, dont be afraid of sex. So many people are perfectly happy with the most extreme of violence but that same person could never put a sex scene in. If the story demands it, then put it in. Never put things in that are not needed by the story or characters.

also, any detail on this kid?

sorry if this is majorly negative, it's just that I cant get much out of the basic story, since it's pretty normal. What you need to make something special are good characters and a strong style
"Parents always think kids are wasting their youth, and always have done [so] down through the millennia," says Tom Forsyth of RAD Game Tools. "'That Ug, always holding things. His front paws will develop in funny ways. Why can't he walk on all fours like normal proto-hominids?' And so, whatever the kids spend the most time doing, that's always what parents think is a waste of time, and what is corrupting their lives. It doesn't matter what that is. If all they did was homework, parents would be worrying that their kids aren't becoming well-rounded people. And, in fact, parents do this - enrolling math nerds in karate classes and the like. There is no way to win - parental paranoia ensures that kids are always doing the wrong thing."

Well, the story starts in 2009. The kid wakes up one day, bored out of his skull and his best friend practically drags him to his house. After watching a movie, they have lunch with a few other friends. Lunch lasts well into the evening because they were talking and they go home. That part has a basis in my own life, so I think that I have written that well enough. During the time that he was in limbo while traveling through time, he gains rudimentary knowledge of the last four hundred years of history. The character is based on myself, strong in the heart, but not strong with the body. He finds his physical strength in the futuristic prison in a very gory way.

My style relies heavily on imagery. I have been writing for some time, but I had a lack of imagery and character development in those stories. Those are the two main things that I am working on in this story. I am telling the story from a first person perspective. I think about plot in first person, so I figure that I should write in it to convey my thoughts. Every time I switch to a new day in the story, the date is posted above the first paragraph. I just thought that you would like to know. It's pretty much a fictional biography. (a la Pendragon.) His best friend will also show up in the story sometime. He is modeled after my own best friend, but with a little more enthusiasm. I didn't want to give away too much info because I am afraid of people ripping my story off. You've got to respect that.

Alright, this can work, it's good that you base it heavily on yourself since you should always write what you know, but you cant rely on that forever (though many big successful authors do that.) Also, don't rely too much on gore, but instead on the psychology behind the gore. That's the big issue with the written word. It's very very good at delving into the minds of the characters and the mental effect of events such as extreme violence, but it's not very good at really shocking someone visually unless the psychology is there, (It's why the Call of Chuthlu RPG is seen as so horrific because the creatures are about insanity and suffering of that kind).
That said, some successful authors do make their name on mindless violence in serious tales with no psychology, and i'm not a successful author, so take my advice at that value.

First person writing is very hard, you cant describe anything at all that the person cannot see at the point when it is described. For example, if a character slept on a hard floor and woke up with an imprint in their face, you cannot mention that imprint unless there is a mirror nearby.

The date thing is perfectly fine. I find it a bit gimmicky, but it's a mainstream technique so people must obviously like it.

oh and always protect your stories. Most people wouldnt steal it since they have their own ideas, but obviously there are those who will without a second thought about it.
I mean I recentle read a webcomic that stole jokes from Monkey Island, The Flea and all kinds of other stuff. That said, everyone steals from everyone else somehow. As the saying goes, "a good author copies, a great author steals"

If my advise sounds confusing, that's because it is. There are no rules in writing. You can do what you want as long as it's entertaining. I mean that's the whole point of it, right?

You have made quite a few good points. Yes, there is psychology behind the violence. Also, some people know that there is in imprint on their face because they can feel it and they check the mirror to make sure. Copying is okay, as long as it isn't full plagiarism. I don't like stealing. It gets people into too much trouble. Besides, I am going to have a copyright on my story before a title is released.

generally copyright is legal the moment a word is written. all you have to prove is that you wrote it first. (mailing it to yourself is a good idea. i generally e-mail it to myself before its finished then mail proper afterwards.

I will probably try that. I can't do any writing today because I am currently nowhere near my home computer.
