Many people do not know of this series, but I feel that this set of games is worth mentioning. Here is the low-down on the set. Note: this is just a single-player role-playing game, no online capability.
You start off in the series (old or new version of 1) as a traveler (choice of class is yours) who comes to the mideival-like town of Spielburg and your mission is to rescue the Baron's children, defeat the brigands who plague the area, and rid the area of the Ogress Baba Yaga (yes, not exactly an ideal name for a female villian). After you choose your class and add skills of your choice within the amount of points you have, you get your introductions and start learning and adapting to the "enviroment". The old version uses a typing parser for "actions" other than movement, which means you type whether you want to look at certain things, pick a lock/cast a spell (if you have these capabilities) , throw a rock/dagger, climb a ladder, ect. The new version of 1 uses enhanced graphics (compared to the old first and the second) and allows the use of just the mouse for all actions. The basic classes for all versions are Fighter (all brawn, no brain), Magic User (starts with magical capability, little physical capability), and Thief (Cunning, Stealthy, Can Pick Locks from the start)
Quest for Glory 2: Trial By Fire takes place after you succeed in 1 and uses the graphics/parser of the old version 1. The setting is that of an ancient Arabian-esque area called Shapier. You can start here in a similar fashion like both versions of 1 or you can import your character from either version of 1... the choice is yours. If you finish 1 though, you start off with the status you ended with (items, attributes, money) and you can add skill points however you see fit, or if you start here, you have to start off with preset status and add a limited number of skill points. Your mission here is to stop a wizard from taking control of the region. In this story, you have an added status called "Honor" which will affect you in future games.
Quest for Glory 3: Wages of War takes place almost immediately after you succeed in 2 (and gain a certain "status"), the feel of this one resembles the QFG1 New. The setting is that of Ancient Egypt-/Jungles of Africa-like area called Tarna which is ruled by a species called Liontaurs (centaur-like lionfolk). If you import from Trial By Fire with enough "Honor", you can start off with the skills your old class along with being able to use a new class called a Paladin. This class is like a hybrid between the Magic User and the Fighter in status, but can actually heal, increase abilities through gaining more "Honor", and can eventually avoid almost all fights when powerful enough. Your mission here is to prevent a massive war between two prominant cultures and find the real cause of the problems.
Quest for Glory 4: Shadows of Darkness takes place immediately after your mission in 3, feel and look resembles 3 with the added "speech". The setting is that of a Transylvanian-like region of Mordavia, where an unknown darkness is brewing and your mission is to stop it. You start off in this one with just the clothes on your back and your wits to survive in an unknown realm.
In all of the games/versions, your actions in and out of combat can determine whether you continue on your career of being a Hero or whether you end up dying in horrible (and possibly funny depending on what you do) ways. So, if you do get this game and are able to successfully get the tools to play it on any modern machine (Windows ME or later), you need to learn as your character would learn, be intelligent about your surroundings, train your body and mind, and lastly... know your limits and experiment. Even though you can do a self-inflicting action such as hitting yourself in the head with a rock, you can gain status from such actions (if you don't go overboard or do something too drastic).
If you already own the disc for the Anthology set, I will give a link that has helped me quite a bit so far (but not completely through troubleshooting), just let me know.
