I believe life is inherently meaningless (as you say), and that while people can find meaning within their own lives (meaning is relative after all) for those who cannot find meaning life still becomes meaningless, I am one of those people who does not really have meaning in their life, but I'm not depressed over it. I guess for me, there's a curiosity and a biological urge, to see life through. Like in a way the vastness of the cosmos is more humbling, rather than daunting.
If we discovered something that absolutely meant humans are special, what would that mean? What would that change? Sure you could start feeling good about yourself saying "yeah, I am special in this universe", but nothing else would change, you'd still do everything you need to do. We ask these questions "What is our use, what is our meaning?" but we are asking this to something that is unconscious, might as well go to your garden and ask a rock what it thinks of you. And hey, if it turned out the rock thought you were a pretty cool guy, would that change anything? Would it mean something to think that all the rocks you go by think and think you're cool? Would that make you feel better, and if so why? Whether a rock thinks you're good, bad, or doesn't think at all, doesn't change the fact that the rock is a rock, it has no meaningful way to let it know what it thinks of you, it's just a rock.
Same with the universe, are you useful to the universe? Why does it matter? It's like asking are you useful to this rock, it makes no difference whether you are or not, and quite frankly it doesn't really make sense! Does life have meaning to the universe? Does life have meaning to the rocks in the garden, it's just a silly thing to think and care about when you really think about it. The universe isn't consciousness, as far as we know, but do you know what is conscious? Life.
So you ask are you meaningless? To the universe, you are, to the rocks, you are, but to your friends? To your family? To your employer or employees? You are useful to them. They're conscious, they can actual comprehend your use, they can actually comprehend your meaning, AND they can communicate that comprehension. If you walked into a garden of thinking rocks and they all hated you or loved you, it would make no difference, but if you walked into a garden of thinking humans and they hated you or loved you, suddenly the difference is tangible and interesting. See you keep trying to wonder what we are in the universe, but what's important is what we are to other humans.
Life is important to life, you have use to life, that's your purpose according to life. You cheer up your friends, to your friends that is your purpose, you work a job, to society that is your purpose, you do whatever it is you do and it's probable that someone appreciates it, and to them, that is your purpose.
You have no inherent meaning, but other life forms can give you meaning to them, and really that's the only meaning that is tangible.
