Like Tnoi suggest, despite lava being dangerous by itsself, the area is completely safe with the right precautions! That's how I managed to get iron ore from the edge of the lake with 100% safety secured!

Though I guess lack of thereof did kill me once or twice

I had two options: take precautions using some of my cobble or die and possibly lose all gold, iron and redstone I found. And iron is kinda important for me since that's usually my go-to material for tools, weapons and (if I have enough of it) armour.

It's my go to material for beacon bases... You need like 2.5 stacks of blocks for one.
I almost have enough for a separate one.

You really should switch to diamonds kitty.
