Depression need help..
« on: July 09, 2007, 11:18:59 PM »
I've been feeling depressed lately. Mostly because of the thought of quitting college, it's just not getting me anywhere. Everyone I know is on top of me pushing me towards the decision of continuing. This has made me become depressed. I guess I need some advice or someone to talk to about this. *Sighs* Thanks in advance..

Thought you may be thinking about dropping out of college, I suggest you continue with your education. I know this may sound like what others may be saying, but they are right. Today an education is highly regarded in your social standings.

She's right... here's a good example on why.

I was eventually planning on going into the Air Force in my lifetime, but right after High School, my 'current' plans were no good... I had planned on having at least a 2 year gap between High School and my career. I thought about it for a second, then decided to go on ahead to a Technical College for that duration. I had went through it, got myself a certification in Computer Specialist (with some extra courses in Networking and Voice/Data Cabling) with Honors, and then signed up for the military.

What sparked my attention was that I had more than enough hours to immediately (after Basic Training) get promoted two full ranks. So now I not only get paid much more than those who started off the same time as me (but without the hours), but I also have a fall-back if I get out of the military, I can troubleshoot most personal computers.

So here is a good example on why you should stay in.

Well, our situations are similar.. and different all at the same time.

My family is going through a very hard situation right now, money wise, and I have to wait another semester to enroll in college. College has been.. terribly hard for me, and I haven't even started yet. I wanted to get the message across to you that.. it's not supposed to be easy. It's supposed to be your real transition from a teenager to adulthood, and adulthood is not a walk in the park. It may be hard, and feel like you're getting nowhere, but everything serves a purpose. Hang in there, because it's always darkest before the dawn!

I know exactly how you feel Kamuro.  Depression and expenses have caused me to fail classes and drop out of college a number of times.  As a result I have been working on my four-year degree for the past eight years.  But no matter how bad things get or how long I am gone, I keep coming back to school.  One of these days I will get my degree, and so should you.  If you need a semester off to recuperate, then by all means do so, but do so with the intention of returning to school someday.  That's my advice, and if you'd like to talk about our similar experiences, I'm always available.
...and everything under the sun is in tune...

You should talk to the counselor at your college if possible. Or find a friend, or anyone, to talk to in order to get your thoughts straightened out a little, if not a lot. Depression can be a serious issue that can hinder your success, if you let it. Instead of letting your issues overwhelm you, try simplifying them and dealing with things little bits at a time. And always remember that no matter what, if you want things to work out, they will, no matter how hopeless things may seem. Should you stick with college? Probably. But I also know a lot of people who feel like they aren't cut out for it, and some change their minds later. Failing in school is not the end of the world. Getting through college merely increases your number opportunities. You'll always have options. Take a few slow, deep breaths and do your best to get your problems out of your way.

It'll be hard and boring and all that other stuff but in the end its always worth it... hope thats helped a bit ^^

I would keep going if I were you...

I am at the point in my life (I'm 34) where I make really good money, I do really well in life and really don't have much to worry about (financially) and I have no schooling past high school... Ok... but it took me 18 years of working from the bottom, clawing my way up and fighting for everything, where someone with a degree will get where I am without having to "prove" themselves the way I had to, just because I didn't go to school.

Honestly, I really would suggest sticking with it and doing whatever it takes to finish. Your life will thank you for it later!  :th_Pyong-1:
