I think that the skin actually is male lol and just says female, so I bought it to test it for him

Good news! That IS the male skin, it's just filed wrong.

If you hit the "derived from" link, it takes you to a male skin!

Yes, but remember it's going to show up under female skintones in your inventory, but it will still work fine with the male avatar.
